Default what brands of sausage and bacon?

for some reason i feel like making breakfast food: eggs, sausage and bacon. thing is, i've never been a bacon or sausage eater. never even bought the stuff. i looked in the grocery store but most of the bacon and sausage (links and patties) had sugar.

for those that eat sausage and bacon, what brands do you buy and is there sugar in them? is there such thing as non-sugar cured sausage?

thanks!

I don't know where you are located but I buy Kroger brand and Field brand bacon that says "no sugar added" and Jimmy Dean sausage.

Smithfield makes a No sugar Added and lower sodium bacon that's pretty good. I found it difficult to find bacon that's not cured with sugar. I was shocked to find sugar in bacon. They won't mention sugar in the Nutrition Info but when you look at the ingredients it'll say "cured with sugar." I haven't found sausages yet with no mention of sugar. Mind you, Atkins advises against eating nitrites and I haven't found ANY bacon that doesn't list nitrites in the ingredients. Where does one get bacon without nitrites??

I was using extra lean turkey bacon. It didn't have the fat we're supposed to be having, but it was the only one not cured with sugars. You canalways make your own sausages if you are a brave person

I've only seen sugar and nitrate-free bacons in health food stores. My favorite brand of sausages is free of all the junk though. Jones' Farm Natural Sausages. Ingredients are just pork, salt, spices in a natural lamb casing. They're very good.

Where do you buy the Jones' Farm sausages? I live in Virginia and we probably have similar stores.

Have you ever tried the nitrite-free bacon and is it more expensive than supermarket bacon? Dumb question, I suppose; what doesn't cost more in a health food store!!

I've purchaed Jones' Farm in a lot of regular grocery stores, in the frozen section. A good trick if you don't know of a good brand of sausage or bacon is just to stand there and look at every label. You're bound to find something with no or very little sugar in it. Good luck!

I totally agree. I have had to stop eating bacon until I can also find a brand with no sugar. I finally discovered bacon was the root of some recent cravings I had been experiencing. When I stopped eating it the cravings went away. But now I am one less thing I can eat which isn't good! I tried turkey bacon but it had sugar and I tried Oscar Meyer bacon also has sugar. I read every single label on every package of bacon and in all of them sugar was either number 2 or 3 ingredient. So I may have to start trekking to the fancier grocery stores in search! Same problem with sausage. I can't find any that don't have sugar.

I have a question. If your bacon or sausage says it has zero carbs, and it was cured with sugar can you still have it? I just bought the book DANDR and I'm in the process of reading it befor I start.
