This should be nicknamed "the Soup Nazi bill": "NO SOUP FOR YOU!"

Thankfully the legislators who proposed this bill admitted they knew it had no chance of passing; they just wanted to do something shocking to get some attention to the obesity "problem."

And it worked - everyone's panties are in a bunch. I predict another five years of arguing about the best way to make everyone healthier while everyone continues to get worse by following government guidelines.

Not only is their fat prejudice showing, but that quote above....is very derogatory and offensive. I hope the people of Mississippi rise up and boot these "good ole boys" out of office on their keesters!!!

That got me to thinking about what the people of Mississippi "hired" these politians to do for them? Is there no poverty or hunger in Mississippi?
What about homelessness? No crime? Nothing more important for these "good ole boys" to be using their efforts and power to combat?

I can only assume that they do not want to use their efforts and power to tackle real problems, so they use this as a cover for not doing anything of real importance. Yep, the way I see this now is... a misdirection, a cover up for the fact that they aren't & won't take care of the real problems.

So they are starting a "war" on overweight people and they can get away with it since it's so easy to get one group to hate another group. Anyone remember the brown eyed vs. blue eyed experiment?

As long as the public can be munipulated like this it prevents us from uniting around the real problems. I'm so sad now.

Well, I go to the news websites, and it appears that with the entire planet in about 90 active wars and the entire country in a major state of dilemma, what we really need to know is something about Britney Spears. It's like the entire news media has become a sleight-of-hand to keep us from noticing anything else that might be going on in the world.

So, who knows what is going on in Mississippi, probably half the people there don't even know more than their own personal experience.

The whole food situation is getting a little demoralizing, given the cost of meat and dairy lately. I'm knocking myself out to do major gardening this year so I can dry and freeze a ton of peppers and tomato sauce and basil. It's getting harder to afford groceries, but not crap of course, only healthy stuff.

Government ruins anything it touches, it's the nature of the beast; a necessary evil for roads and militaries but otherwise a disaster when over-used. Government trying to get in the act of controlling food intake for people is pretty scary. This bill is laughable and unworkable for 100 reasons, but who knows what'll happen if one isn't so laughable, or if the people inhouse to vote on it are charged with hysteria based on media events at the time?

One only has to look at the proposed legislation in the UK, with socialized medicine, to see the utter hysteria, and worst possible response, to obesity and childhood obesity.

I don't really know that there is any solution likely except, we can pray, for the world of science to finally let go of enough of the overwhelming influence of all the medical-education funders and medical-facility funders being crap/corn/sugar/wheat corporations... and finally get with a little of the actual science about what is killing people.

mmm PJ very wag the dog...

I know I, as a member of media, just see most of the news as PR spin.

There's money behind everything.

So very well-put!

And I fear say -- it's only going to get worse.

We need to demand from our governments stricter accountability.

I'm canadian but I think we're all in the same boat.

I still hear so many people say on election day...."I'm voting for so-and-so because my father did" etc.

I hope my DD sees a change in all this, but I don't have high hopes.
However as you stated ealier ...we can pray!!!
Hopefully there won't come a day when they dictate that as well!!!

This whole bill is so very sad...because they are not taking into consideration that sometimes, the reason for obesity (morbid obesity as described by doctors) is due to a medical condition and not always food! I know myself, I have a thyroid condition along with being disabled and walk with a walker...before understanding the whole "healthy" aspect of proper dieting, I would eat only 1 meal a day at 4:00 in the afternoon...nothing before...nothing after. Yet, my weight is horrendous!

All this to say, there is already a stigma attached with an overweight person walking into a eating establishment w/o having to be publicly humiliated by having the owner escort you out!
