my husband and i were at his co-worker's house for dinner sunday night, and his wife is diabetic. she's leaning toward south beach, and actually said one of the reasons she won't do atkins is because he died of a heart attack.

i told her no, he didn't, and if she looks up his death certificate she'll find that his cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head from slipping on ice... and that his apparent weight gain was 30lbs of fluid put on in 2 weeks while his organs shut down in the coma.

i told her "now, you find me a diet that'll prevent slipping on ice and cracking my skull, i will GLADLY ditch low-carb for it!"

as far as i'm concerned, this wasn't bitchy. she was being an ass for a) not listening to you, b) contradicting herself, and c) not letting it go. she deserved every word.

I wish I could come up with snappy come backs. I never can. I usually just roll my eyes while my mind is screaming "STFU and go drink some lowfat milk you ignorant sheep!" Then I start thinking about mutton, and it makes everything all better.

But if I say the latest research supports it, it may be hard for me to come up with specifics. Taubes is a very long argument, although I guess I can summarise. I guess I'd better memorise some studies! Anybody have some links to clear evidence?

You big liar! You just ship them off to Boulder!

My mother was recently diagnosed with diabetes - what kind, I'm not sure - but for the past few months she's cut down her carbs considerably and excluded sugar. She's lost a lot of weight and she's got her diabetes under control.

They have always, in particular my stepfather, gone on about how unhealthy my way of eating is without doing any real research or listening to anything I have to say. How ironic that my mother is now following a low carb diet to improve her health. Of course that's different, and my way of eating is still unhealthy and wrong despite it being virtually identical to hers! Oh give me strength!

Go figure!!!

I thought all the hippies were in Woodland Park??? (I'm in the Falcon area)
As far as comebacks go, I haven't really had anyone full on argue with me over it. But I do remember about 3 years ago, before I did Atkins, having a conversation with some co-workers about it and they all had mis-information about how the diet works and how Dr. Atkins died. I wish I could go back now and straighten them all out!!!

What a great thread - so many creative suggestions.

I've got one I'm ready to try. I've got a pretty dry sense of humor so I think I might be able to pull this off.

Next time I'm asked about my weight loss I'm going to tell them I am using Sanitized Dietary Tapeworms. I'll explain in great detail how I just take a pill at the beginning of the month, eat whatever I want, and then at the end of the month I force myself to vomit up a fat, squishy 10 lb tapeworm. I haven't figured out all the details. Maybe I'll say that sometimes the doctors have to remove it or describe how one time the worm got stuck in my sinus cavity and had to be removed through my nose. The more disgusting the description, the better. I'll maybe recommend a doctor I know where they can get the pills, since of course they are highly illegal.

If they don't believe me, I'll mention Atkins. The shock value of the health risks and supposed damage I'm doing to my body should be somewhat decreased.

You could always say "I stopped listening to uninformed idiots concerning what is or isn't healthy"
