He seemed less enthusiastic about rice as a starch than Paul Jaminet, but eats it on occasion. http://chriskresser.com/arsenic-in-...d-should-you-be
White potato is OK with him, but he looks at it with a Paleo lens, and you have to establish the level of carbs you can tolerate. If rice or white potato result in a BG rise for you, then don't use. I like sweet potato best too. It seems more nutritious just because it is orange, likely a figment of my imagination.

Just wanted to share,

Yesterday I cut out the dairy (cream in coffee) and added coconut oil.
You can see what I ate in my journal. (I know we have MY Plan, but I don't have exact weights/amounts so I didn't mess with it)

This morning, I was down 2.2 lbs from Friday morning's weight!

Cautiously ecstatic!

I took off another 8 pounds in February, from 190 to 182. I'm hoping for 4 more pounds in March.

Woah! Eight pounds in one month…that is fabulous. Congrats! Anything new except avoiding dairy?

Fabulous! So very impressive and I'd also like to know what you are eating...or not eating.

I'm doing what I call Dr. Ede's diet in addition to staying dairy free. I'm keeping the carbs low (under 30 g net), protein moderate (~80 g), and not worrying about the fat grams.

Most of the month I was eating a lot of chicken (drumsticks), salads with olive oil and vinegar, and bacon and eggs. Snacks are macadamia nuts and olives, plus occasionally coconut bark (at least I think that's what it's called).

I was disappointed that my FBG wasn't doing that amazing thing it did last time I (briefly) tried Dr. Ede's diet. A couple of days ago I went back to eating this canned chili (Cattle Drive, no beans) I really like. I had some on hand, but I wasn't eating it because one can of that chili alone puts me over on my carbs. I started eating it for lunch on Monday or Tuesday because it was the end of the pay period and I wanted to eat something I had on hand instead of going to the store. Imagine my surprise when my FBG immediately dipped to the 70's and 80's.

Not sure what's going on. Is something in the chili helping with the FBG? Is a slightly higher carb amount better? Was there something in the salad pushing my FBG up? I guess I need to experiment a bit more.

I've pretty much completed my food diary. I think I missed two days. I'm not sure if you can see it.

Here's a link to a blog post about the chili. Unfortunately the Costco buy it from has discontinued it: http://www.poormansatkins.com/1/pos...bean-chili.html

Maybe the protein is just a shade too high? Maybe when you eat the chili you're consuming less protein on those days.

I as curious about where they get 17 grams carbs in a no bean chili. I can barely read the ingredient list so here's a pic of it:

modified food starch is one of the first 5 ingredients.
Did you know that some of this brand has been recalled for botulism?

Wow, 8 lbs is a lot to lose in a month when you've been at this for a while. You've obviously found an approach that your body loves. So pleased for you.

Yes, it's very high for no bean chili.

Yes. I haven't got botulism from it yet, though.

I think it's about the same. The can of chili has 50 grams of protein. Leaving only 30 more for the rest of the day.

Hi Costello,
Hope you are well half way through March. Since you started this informative, long-lived thread about dairy, adding here:

I am reading the new book, The Wahls Protocol (excellent if you have ANY auto-immune or neurological condition) and even her basic level diet (of three) excludes all gluten grains and dairy. She writes "gluten and casein molecules have a similar amino acid sequence, and so to our immune cells they are often equivalent. When we eat these foods, our dopamine levels rise" we get addicted and overeat. Gluten and casein interact with the same receptors stimulated by narcotics, the opioid receptors. Low level intolerances, 90% of time without abdominal problems, result in a long list of diseases and vague symptoms like unexplained fatigue and rashes, headaches, mood problems.
She is pretty adamant that both have to go especially if you have just about any health issue,
