Default Splenda sources in UK?

Dh will be in London on business and I was wondering if Splenda is available in stores?

Thanks for your help!

What about Stevia?

It should be "legal" every where since it not a product, just a plant extract.

Thumbs down Stevia in UK

Stavia is allegedly available in the UK but I have not yet found it. Still looking ... meanwhile I am minimising my use of sweeteners as much as possible ... while keeping my eyes open when I am out.

Hi all,

Can't find anything available, and definitely no Splenda or Stevia that I am aware of. I have looked at the labels in the supermarkets and the best one I have found so far is Hermeseta, they have the tablets and the granules and it has the least carbs.

Hope that helps.

Bez

Thumbs down Stevia - UK Health Stores

I actually went in and had a chat with the manager of a High Street Health Store that has quite a reputation. He told me there is a lot of controversy about Stevia and he knows it is freely available in the States but they have been told not to sell it in the UK - especially in health food stores ... ?? ... so even if he could get a supply at my request he would not.

Thought it only fair to give you the British version of Stevia and attitudes to it by those who would be our suppliers.

Take care.

Found Stevia in Victoria Health foods, Harlequin centre, Watford, Herts.

It is an odd taste in drinks but should cook OK

Bez,
It certainly is sweet but not like white sugar.

Perhaps brown sugar with a hint of liquorice comes close.

Victoria could be a one off health food shop. does not seem to be like Holland and Barrett

Hi Rustpot, Bez and all.

I don't know how many stores there are but after searching the www I've found them listed in Watford, St Albans, Muswell Hill and Edgware, so I suspect that if not nationwide then possibly SE/London.

Hope this helps

Keep smiling
Ken.

Smile Muswell Hill

Now I wonder if that is the store that Yvonne was referring to at the first UK Low-Carb Gathering. She couldn't remember the name and when I checked out the road it was more Muswell Hill than Kilburn and a verrrrrry lonnnnnnng road which I was not too keen to walk down - traffic fumes start the wheezing.

Wonder what happened to Yvonne? See what you have started Ken? - albeit I am glad you did your search!

Hope you and Margaret are well.
Take care.

Default Stevia in the UK

Probably the availability on Stevia in the UK is rooted in bulletins like this one, from your own Food Standards Agency in June of this year:
http://www.foodstandards.gov.uk/pdf_files/stevia.pdf
or this one from last year:
http://www.foodstandards.gov.uk/bul...o120/stevia.htm

Too bad they don't give specifics. I've got my doubts about the information.

Hmmmmph.

Default Muswell Hill

Went to check out Victoria Health food at Muswell Hill Broadway on Saturday. Very easy to find just opposite M&S, 'just' some 1 hour bus journey from London Bridge. Couldn't believe my eyes, but then the price tag was too convincing - 9-14 pounds depending on the servings amount.

Still not very sure though if it's safe. The information on the UK government website isn't reassuring, though they don't give much details.

What do you think?

Default Stevia ... Safe?

Consider doing a search on this very website on the subject of Stevia. There's a ton of info right here to help you decide for yourself if you want to try it.

It would appear to be a political (sugar and Nutrasweet corporate lobbies have lots of money!) issue overall, rather than a proven (or disproven) safety issue.

Stevia has been in use in South America and Asia for many many years, legally. In North America (Canada and US) as a supplement, available for many years.

Official reports of adverse reactions are very very scarce.

I've been LC for 3.5 years and believe Stevia is safe. There are diabetes specialists, many of them, with excellent reputations, that believe Stevia is the only safe 'sweetener'.

Etc. etc.
