When my old electric alarm clock with blue-grey screen broke, I replaced it with one with red numbers and do seem to sleep more soundly. Previously a blue haze lit up most of the bedroom like dusk. The new one has visible red numbers, but that's it, the rest of the room is pitch black. It was not easy to find a clock with red numbers (90% are blue/green/white), but the simple westclox I found was on sale too.
You can now get fluorescent bulbs that have a "warm" coloured light. Some even are shaped like incandescent bulbs which I needed for lamps where the shade clamps directly onto the bulb. They are more expensive, but worth it to make the home cosy.
