I would always lose weight when I first went on an SSRI (Prozac, Zoloft) and then some weeks later, the carb cravings would kick in with a vengeance and I would gain it back. The carb cravings were one of the worst side effects for me, along with tiredness. 20 years ago when I was much thinner, I first tried Prozac and I don't remember it being such a concern. More recently and much heavier (and presumably more insulin resistant) I don't know how a low carb diet would have affected that because I couldn't even have imagined managing it. Practically all I wanted to eat was sugar.
The SNRIs which include Wellbutrin, Effexor, and Cymbalta are considered to be less likely to cause weight gain. Wellbutrin made me feel crazy mean and Effexor gave me hives. Cymbalta wasn't even out yet when I was on antidepressants. (I don't take them any more since I started cutting down on calcium and supplementing magnesium. Got the idea from this website: http://george-eby-research.com/html...on-anxiety.html)
I would think that a low carb diet is going to most likely benefit those who feel good from an SNRI. Those who respond to SSRIs may feel the need to eat more carbs to affect their serotonin levels. I've been taking 5-HTP for that reason too.
I don't have time to look for the reference now, but within the last year there was an interesting experiment done on earthworms, who apparently share many of our genes, which indicated that serotonin itself precipitated weight loss (rather than affecting appetite).
