OK, low carb friends and veterans, I need a few ideas.
We're going on a long vacation this summer (the perks of teaching), including camping, moteling, and cruising -- a whirlwind around the West.
I need tips for traveling: when we're on the cruise, it has been recommended to stick mostly to the buffets. We've been avoiding restaurants for the last 3 months as we aren't really sure how to ensure that there aren't hidden carbs in the food -- and we are going to be in locations without familiar restaurants. And camping should be OK as far as cooking meat and eggs, but does anybody have any other ideas for camping meals?
Just any general vacation ideas for the LC WOE would be great.

I would look into making some sort of jerky (beef, turkey, etc.) and dried veggies with a dehydrator.
Make a HUGE bunch, pack it into ziploc bags, and take it with you. It's great for camping! And, if you're ever stuck or unsure of what to eat, you're prepared!
We have traveled and camped for years. Will be at the Galveston Island beach for an extended period in Aug --- meeting all the kids (7) and all the grandchildren (9) there -- none of which are low carb people.
Just before you leave make a cooler with :
a bag of cooked and seasoned chicken strips to nibble on
a bag of individual portion cheeses in a couple of flavors
a bag of hard boiled eggs, to just eat or make an egg salad
a bag of cut up vegetables that we can have to nibble on
a bag of nuts, maybe a variety of the lowest carb ones
a bag of blueberries, they keep pretty well
eating out is easy, order like you would eat at home or fancy salad so it feels special
treat the family to a pizza night out, and order my "crustless one" (see my "Out with a group" thread)
AND, have a great time!! Alma
Katmeyster - since you won't know exactly where you'll be dining, then that can be sorta tough. All I can suggest is that you ask if it is something that you are unsure about. I mean, they may can not tell you the carb count, but they might could tell you what all comes on/in a dish and then you can ask to have certain things left off or out so that you can control how many carbs you are getting. Places I've found you have to watch hidden carbs are salads because sometimes they don't always list all of the ingredients and sometimes there are carrots and things that are a little higher that you may not want. Ask if meats come with sauces or gravy and that sort of thing and if all else fails, ask for just a plan ole slab of beef! Ha! I think you should be good though - my wife and I went to Disney a few weekends back and I stayed on plan. It was TOUGH, but I managed!
for camping, how about veggies in foil packets? There are lots of good recipes for all kinds of this stuff.
for motelling- try and get one with a fridge or get a really cheap styrofoam cooler and keep it in your room using ice from the ice machine.
Cruising is great for LC- but them I don't really care about exactly what they put in the food. I would eat in the dining room- you can order anything and everything. Lots of salads and veggies too.Want 4 shrimp appetizers- they will bring them. Want steak and chicken and shrimp- yours. You can ask that they do not serve your bread and don't bring the dessert menu.
For breakfast I always had any kind of eggs I wanted.
The buffets were tough- too many choices and the desserts and breads always looked better than the food! The one exception ws the roast chicken/rotissare (sp?) bar on a ship we were on this past fall- that was a great lunch.
Most of all- stay OP but HAVE FUN!!! If LC is your new way to eat, make it part of your life.
Enjoy!!!
