Smile New here... IR diet and PCOS

Hi, all,
Whew, it's been a long road to get here. I started the IR diet after a huge epiphany that unless I limit carbs I feel terrible!! I always have, and I never knew why, but my life had spiraled really far down until last June when I started to figure out some of my health mysteries like food intolerances and vit. D deficiencies, B def. etc.

I thought it was all this other stuff causing me to feel sleepy, foggy, and lethargic among other things, though... not carbs. I'm insulin resistant and diagnosed with PCOS as well in the last month. I have well over a hundred pounds to lose, but at this point, I have 200 as my goal. I plan to take it as it comes and focus more on daily actions than the number on the scale. I figure if I'm eating as I should be and drinking water, taking metformin (500 mg), exercising, etc, the weight will come off as it will.

I know I can't do super low carb, and I know I can't lose weight on Weight Watchers type stuff. In fact, the only weight I've lost in forever started last June when I began cutting out gluten and dairy. I eat a little of those two now, but I still limit them. My weight started stalling and coming back on with some female troubles I had. That's when I figure out PCOS and insulin resistance. I now attribute that weight loss mainly to eating lower carb... hmm.

Glad to be here,
Lisa

Welcome Lisa. It sounds like you are on the right track. If dairy and gluten are problems for you, then you may want to eliminate them as much as possible from your diet. If you have sensitivities, then even small amounts may prevent your body from completely healing. You may find that you need a higher dose of metformin to maximize its effectiveness. I think the common dose is 1500 mg, added gradually up from 500mg.

Does Metformin assist in weight loss? I also am insulin resistant and have PCOS, but have never been put on any meds for them.

It seems to help some people with weight loss, but not all. You won't really know which group you're in until you try though. The maximum dose is 2500 mg, though most people start on 500 mg and increase their dose slowly.
