Default Fatty Diet Linked to Pancreatic Cancer

High Saturated Fat Levels Raise Risk of the Cancer by More Than a Third, Study Says

To the risk of obesity and heart attack, the government had added yet another reason to avoid eating lots of fat, especially from meat and dairy products: pancreatic cancer.

The National Institutes of Health has determined that people who indulge heavily in meat and dairy fats are likely more to develop this deadly disease, which will strike more than 42,000 Americans this year and kill more than 35,000, according to the American Cancer Society.

Men and women who consumed large amounts of saturated fat were 36 percent more likely to suffer from pancreatic cancer, researchers reported online in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

The study found that the link between fat intake and cancer was strongest for saturated fat from animal food sources, which were associated with a 43 percent increase in cancer risk.

Among the participants who consumed the highest amounts of total fats, the rate of cancer was 53 percent higher for men and 23 percent higher for women, compared to participants with the lowest fat diets.

Combining the data for men and women, the researchers found that total fat consumption was associated with 23 percent higher rates of pancreatic cancer, while high intake of monosaturated fats was associated with 22 percent higher cancer rates.

They also noted that studies have linked saturated fat to insulin resistance and that diabetes and insulin resistance have been associated with increased pancreatic cancer risk.

How about the people who have read the study discuss it in the LC Research/Media forum, and the people who have not read the study discuss it here?

Thankful to my dietary lifestyle, I have no fear of developing or reason to discuss pancreatic cancer.

"Blessed is the man who, having nothing to say, abstains from giving wordy evidence of the fact".

Others may benefit by reading THIS.

Regarding your quote above, I do read between the lines! Also, please be kind to Martin as this type of forum is a not proper venue to criticize those perhaps lacking an understanding of concepts such as the Cox semi-parametric proportional hazards model and its applicability to your aforementioned half a million people.. Thankfully, this is a common sense forum and Martin is more than qualified and appreciated in that regard. Jmho.

Best wishes.

Bo

Thanks, BoBo. When I've tried to cite other articles on "Atkins" sites which express a similiar risk of cancer with a diet high in saturated fats, I've been called a "troll" or "liar" . Yes, I have read Good Calories, Bad Calories but feel that the evidence is nevertheless substantial against high saturated fat intake.........

Folks don't have to accept that fact, but it has obvious relevance for all of us.

Um, substantial evidence that is all poor, is still poor.

100000000000000 observational studies is still just making guesses.

The evidence that the Food Pyramid causes harm, is of the same quality and type as the evidence originally used to make up the Food Pyramid in the first place? Guessing, guessing, guessing.

I will go have my high sat fat dinner now. Hot dogs! and vegetables with butter!

Facts don't come from epidemiology, only hypotheses.

Abby, personally I only avoid saturated fats derived from red meat and dairy.

In another thread it was suggested that the problem may to be the saturated fats derived from red meats and dairy? Check out This Guy and This Article.

If correct, the problem may be that nasty little Neu5Gc guy found exclusively in red meats and dairy.

I supplement with coconut oil and consume fish and poultry with no fear of their saturated fats.

Btw, Ajit Varki no longer consumes red meat or dairy.

Best wishes.

Bo
