Gestational diabetes and ketosis
Hey all. Im back after a A LOONG Break. And I have an unusual situation maybe you experts may help me sort out.
First, Im 8 mos pregnant. I know, huzzah.
Second, Ive only gained 10 lbs. Double huzzah. Ive joked that Im turning my fat into baby. Im discovering that this may not be a good thing. Its been an easy pregnancy, mild morning sickness, few aches and pains, no cravings, I ate quite normally, didnt have extreme appetite, anything. I got to enjoy the convenience of a morning bagel, being preggers, and a few other indulgences, but I didnt go crazy. quite the idyllic situation.
Then I went in for the glucose test. Failed. They say Ive got gestational diabetes, but I convinced them (and my test results werent THAT high) that I could manage through diet and exercise. I mean, I KNOW carbs, eh? Been there, got the tshirt.... And as expected, they want me to eat 9 starch servings a day, the equivalent of 175 g/day (just makes your bloodsugar rise THINKING about it, eh?) I say nein, nix. I aint going that way. I can NOT eat half a loaf of bread a day. I might have a half an english muffin with 17 lbs of cream cheese in the morning, lots of nuts for snacks, heavy on the protein, with a carb base and Its been pretty stable. I get about 100 g/day, theres abouts. anywhere from 1800 cals/day to 2300/day, depending on how hungry I am, whats available, etc.
Then I started checking ketones in urine. WHoa. SOme days there are none, some days its purple (why couldnt ketosis be this easy when NOT pregnant!?!?) Im reading that ketones during pregnancy is bad news...but there is controversy! It seems counter productive to eat a small scoop of low sugar ice cream in the evenings to knock me out of overnight ketosis when Im limiting sugars, but....it works. What do you guys know about this? Ive been happy that Im not gaining tons of weight, but the literature is clearly still so anti low carb, Im having a hard time finding good information. And my nutritionist doesnt answer me when I ask about ketosis. All she can do is tow the ADA line.
GD/ketosis/blood sugar balance help dearly desired!
