Default Atkins and Cancer

I sent an e-mail to the Atkins Centre but never got a response - I know some of you may have an opinion on this.

My mother has breast cancer which metastized to her liver (she's doing well, only has to have 3 month checks). She gained a lot of weight during her chemo and is desperate to get the weight off, however, she has to have liver ultrasounds and sometimes the fat can be mistaken for cancer cells apparently. My question is, do you think she should be doing Atkins with all the high fat and protein - we don't want to have anything show up that shouldn't be there and the liver is known for collecting fat.

Thanks - hopefully someone has some insight on this point.

PS: Her oncologist is 100% again low carbing - so there's not an option there

My 2 cents worth - No, I don't think your mom should do Atkins. There probably have not been studies to see if Atkins would be helpful to your mom or not. It sounds like the studies that have been done suggest a high fat diet would be bad for her. Perhaps she could do one of the diets that limit bad carbs and emphasize lower fat proteins. Congratulations on your mom returning to good health. Mothers are so precious. Dallasalis

I think the best person to ask about her diet would be her oncologist. Wishing her years of good health!

One of my best friends had breast cancer and went through a mastectomy and chemo....was pregnant during this time, and then after the baby was born, had the last round of chemo. After they removed the port-o-cath, a piece came lose and wound up in her heart, so she had to have some type of procedure to remove that. Anyway...after all of that, she ended up with about 40 lbs. to go. She started on Atkins in January of this year with her doctor's approval and has already lost all of her weight and is at goal.

I don't know if this means anything....but she had no problem with it. That being said...last week she "crashed" and was feeling horrible. She was afraid the cancer had returned and had a bone scan (or whatever scan it is they do) and there was no cancer. Her doctor just said her body had been through so much that it wasn't unexpected, but that it didn't have anything to do with the diet.

Anyway...hpe this helps.

You guys are thinking around wrong lines. Sugar feeds cancer, it is optimum nutrition for cancer cells which have higher metabolic rate than normal cells. So regulating blood glucose levels is the desired approach to treating cancer (along with other medical measures). For more info goto www.MERCOLA.com and do some reseach. Of course, strait Atkins diet does not differentiate in types of fat, as you probably want to have a 'good' Omega 3:Omega 6 ratio of about 1:3, which u wont get from many foods. ANyways check the link i posted it's good if u are worried about health issues.
