Question Type 1 Doctor Referral

Hello,

This is my first post to this forum. My son has Type 1 diabetes. I've read Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution book and have been following his approach with managing my son's blood sugar with good results but his mom is following the Children's Hospital of Orange County's recommendations (which is also the ADA's) of a high carbohydrate diet. I would love to see Dr. Bernstein but he is in New York and not taking on new patients.

I'm looking for a practitioner in Orange County, California that follows this philosophy so I can bring my son to him and get his Mom on board.

Any referrals or suggestions?

Randy

Sorry to hear of your son's diagnosis and possible struggle with the best type of diet for him.

Dr. Steve Parker immediately comes to mind, though he is in Scottsdale, which to someone in NC seems "close by" and a lovely town for a long weekend.

EDIT: http://diabeticmediterraneandiet.co...teve-parker-md/
Good blogs, but forget visiting him, appears he is a hsopitalist now.

You can also search three doctor and RD referral sites:
http://lowcarbdoctors.blogspot.com (quite a few CA docs here)
http://primaldocs.com
http://paleophysiciansnetwork.com (these two usually have many repeats, start with Primal Doc)

Good Luck

Happened to be reading back in Franziska's blog, and noticed her article about LC for T1 Diabetes, and also remembered she lives in SoCal. http://www.lowcarbdietitian.com/1/p...ice-debate.html

Have you found a doc from any of those lists? If not, contact her. She's leaving the VA to start private practice soon.

Also forgot to mention the Nutrition and Metabolism Society. Great website For diabetes info and now has a Facebook page (Franziska posted another article on NMS FB, how I eventually ended up at first article posted) http://www.nmsociety.org/

Also keep in mind that an NP or PA, especially one who has had diabetes (any brand!), can be a good person to work and help with the day to day decisions for a diabetic. The ideal team would be such a person and an endo who supervised.

And keep in mind that a lot of younger people do spend a few years in rather poor control. The younger body can even cope with those few years. Relationship quality may be as important between you and your son as his actual control of diabetes.
