Default The Carb Loading...D**rhea

OK, admittedly the entire pint of Ben and Jerry's frozen yogurt was probably not the best choice for a carb up food , but it was low fat and high carb and I really (honestly) was hungry when I ate it. I also had some pizza, Gatorade, a little popcorn and a beer last night. Last Friday I had low fat granola with soy milk and pasta with tomato sauce. My menus have been different, but the Sat. results have been the same both weeks: uncomfortable abdominal cramping for 2 hours followed by our friend *rhea for a total of about 4 hours I'd rather forget. I'm taking Lactaid, I'm taking Beano and I'm slurping Pepto because it's the only thing that seems to be doing any good. What is up with this and will it go away after a few weeks if I tought it out?

Default awww ...

That happens. I was gonna say s*it happens, but that would not have been funny, right?

Seriously, xome discomfort is sometimes experienced. I try to avoid large amounts of dairy at the beginning of the carb-up. When I do, I use small amounts.

The enzyme your body produces to break down lactose is apparantly on a need-be basis. If you don't need it (as when you drop carbs--including lactose), your body stops making it.

Then, when you flood it with an influx of lactose, it can't break it down and you get to experience what lactose intolerant people get to experience.

It does go away.

Dani-
Sorry to hear about your "troubles"! I am just echoing what Dan says.... sometimes it happens but it does go away. I have been fine in that department this weekend. Heed his advice and try to do limited dairy on next Friday night and see what happens. Hopefully, everything will be more under control.

Take care,
Linda

Default Thanks!

OK, I will go easy on the dairy next Friday - although the same thing happened to me last week with no dairy at all. Hopefully, my bod will get the hang of this after a few weeks and not freak out so much.

Also, I'm a little worried about losing electrolytes with the d*rhea - should I be? Can I counteract that by drinking Gatorade?

Gatorade will work fine. And it fits PERFECTLY into the carb-up phase ... LOL
