Smile Great Bowls of Fiber

This is a really tasty hot cereal, and helps get things "moving" if you need help in that area

1 1/2 cups wheat bran
1 cup ground flax seeds
1/2 cup whole flax seeds
1/2 cup dried coconut (unsweetened)
1/2 cup ground almonds
1/2 cup psyllium husks
1 cup vanilla whey protein powder
3 tablespoons cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon pure stevia extract powder

Put everything in a large rubbermaid canister, cover, and shake until well mixed. Store in fridge. Makes 11 1/2 cup servings, 5 net carbs each.

To serve: put 1/2 cup in a bowl, and add 4-5 ounces boiling water (adjust amount of water depending on how think/runny you like it). Stir and let sit 2-3 minutes before eating. You can add a few drops of cream, blueberries, etc if you like.

From fitday (entire recipe):
Fat 144g
Protein 136g
Carb 232g
Fiber 178g

From wha tI understand whole flax seeds can't be digested by the system. Of course that is one thing that can help it get going I supose

My typical morning cereal looks alot like this. I use the wheat bran, ground flax seeds, designer whey, cunnimon and sweetner. I don't have the husks, but I do have the almonds and coconut so maybe I'll give this a go

Do you get ground flax seeds at the health food store - or can you do it yourself in a food processor?

I'm lazy so I buy the flax seeds already ground. Once the package is opened, they must be stored in the fridge and used fairly quickly.

It's probably better to grind your own. Whole seeds can be kept in the pantry until needed and are cheaper (I can buy whole seeds in bulk at Whole Foods, but the ground ones are pre-packaged). I've never actually tried to grind them, but I would guess that a coffee grinder would work well.

I got some whole seeds yesterday (only $1.49/lb ) and will try grinding some in the coffee grinder - probably tomorrow. I saw a pkg of ground flax seed meal - felt like the consistency of flour - is that what you normally get?

The brand I buy is Bob's Red Mill Flax Seed Meal. I get the regular (they also have Golden Flax and Organic). The package does feel a bit like flour, so what you saw sounds like the same thing.

How did grinding your own work out? The seeds contain a lot of oil, so the ground meal is sticky (more like ground almonds), not dry and powdery like flour.

I grind flax seeds in the blender with the smallest blender attachment, then store it in the freezer in that same attachment. Never had a problem with it being sticky.

Same here, I bought a coffee grinder specifically to grind my own flax seeds. I've never had a problem with it being sticky. It is just like grinding almonds. I keep the ground up flax in the freezer. Never had it go bad, and I've kept it for weeks at a time. I believe you know if it goes bad by the smell. Maybe someone know more and correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't know if ground flax seed meal smells bad or not when it goes bad, because I've never had it around long enough to find out! I buy the Bob's Red Mill already ground. I don't have a lot of time in the morning when I am making breakfast so the easier the better. And I just keep it in the frig. I've not had a problem so far!

I like the additions of nuts and stuff to the cereal. Mine is a very basic one I found here somewhere:

3 tbs flax seed meal
1 scoop designer whey protein (I love the vanilla praline!)
1 tbs of cocoa
1packet of splenda or other sweetener
Pour boiling water and stir until the right consistency. I do add butter and a little heavy cream to make it more hot cereal like. Thanks for the tip about the nuts and blueberries! I will certainly try it.
