PCOS stands for polycystic ovary syndrome. Your doctor can order an ultrasound of your ovaries to see if they have cysts, but in many cases, like mine, cysts are not visible. Women may have irregular menstrual cycles, heavy menses, or infrequent periods. This can lead to infertility.
They can develop excessive hair growth on the face, abdomen etc. We will often gain weight in the abdomen, making us apple shaped. They can have increased blood lipids like cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL (the bad cholesterol), and low HDL (the good cholesterol). Weight loss can be challenging. High blood pressure may be present. Sometimes they will develop elevated insulin levels which can lead to diabetes.
Almost all of these symptoms can be decreased, or improved upon by following a low carb diet, and exercising.
