Default Metformin - basics

Thought I'd put this out there since I see many posts about people wanting to discontinue Metformin because it's not lower their blood sugars.

Metformin was not designed to lower blood sugars (like insulin). What it is designed to do is to make your cells less insulin resistant (IR) so that the insulin you produce will work more effectively.

So if you're only taking Metformin and you still have high numbers, you may still have to take other medications and/or eat lower carb. Personally I recommend Dr. Bernstein's "Diabetes Solution". His diet is not just designed to lower blood sugar, but also to reverse IR...which may not occur on just a low carb diet.

Also, there is are two types of Metformin...the regular version and an extended release. What they're finding is that people who have a problem with the regular version, do just fine on the extended release (Glumetza) because it reacts a bit more slowly in the system. So if one is bothering you, ask about the other.

Also, I will add here that Metformin robs your body of vitamin B12. It is a good idea to supplement with Methylcobalamin sublingual B12 if you're taking Metformin.

Huh - I had read about that, but thought it was diabetes that was to blame, not the medication. Either I misunderstood, or where ever I read it assumed all T2s would be taking Metformin.
