This is what I found on WebMD:

There isn't enough information to know if betaine hydrochloride is safe. It might cause heartburn.

Special Precautions & Warnings:
Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Not enough is known about the use of betaine hydrochloride during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.

Peptic ulcer disease: There is a concern that the hydrochloric acid produced from betaine hydrochloride might irritate stomach ulcers or keep them from healing.

Sounds a bit scary to me.

I followed this plan and I was fine.

I'm a little skeptical of WebMD ever since they told me niacin was more dangerous than statin drugs

But it's a little known fact that people who avoid meat lose the enzymes and signaling that help them digest it. The Betaine HCL did wonders for me when I was sick and needed a little help. After a few months, you taper off and the body is trained again.

But that might not be your problem!
