Was the sauerkraut "naturally fermented", ie not pasteurized, containing live bacterial cultures?? If you're new to consuming live-cultured vegetables, the recommendation is to go slow, just as Ms Arielle commented above. It can and will cause bloating if you go overboard . Try starting out with just a Tablespoonful per day and build up slowly from there.

I've been making/eating my own sauerkraut for a few years, even so I limit daily portion to about 1/4 cup.
