It is not clear that homocystein is a realible marker for pending MI and CAD as well as C-reactive protein. Some recent studies suggest that homocystein raises when heart desease is present already and with advanced age, high animal protein diet and lack of certain enzymes and vitamins to metabolize this substance. When it comes to women and heart desease, I believe, it is estrogen and young age that keeps our artheries clean and heart healthy. After that - we are at much higher risk than men when it comes to CHD, so every little bit of protection counts.
Read on and draw your own conclusion, IMO more studies needed.
