I agree, this article refers just to sugar, but if you look at it as refined carbs, which are particularly good at raising insulin levels and causing insulin resistance, you might be able to see how Val's grandfather, who ate sugar balanced with unprocessed foods (as Val said), lived slimly to 96, while Val avoided sweets (and I presume consumed lots of refined carbs) and gained weight.
