Dr. Westman's diet lecture is presented on DietDoctor's membership website...they are both LC, but different programs for different client bases. Dr. Westman is not convinced that "food quality" has an major impact on weight loss, and since his clients are obese/diabetic/metabolically "deranged', he is OK with 3 packs of sweetener, regular mayo made with soybean oil, etc. Until a clinical trial proves otherwise, he considers rules such only real or non-processed food, grass-fed, etc "nice extras" but not required for weight loss. Many of his clients eat all fast food, or use diet soda, sugar-free jello, etc. and they still lose weight. A long-term goal may be to stop using artificial sweeteners, or other processed foods, but as long as you follow the clinic diet guidelines, they are allowed. For products like Atkins shakes, he would suggest a month trial, but if you stop losing weight, then they don't work for you.
