In the late 1980s, the government of Newfoundland spent $22 Million to grow 800,000 cucumbers in what was termed Premier Peckford's Pickle Palace. They had to give up after the entire crop had been wiped out by fungus or bacteria several times. That's a problem with monocultures in glass houses with concrete floors. The staff were always dressed in hazmat suits.
