Default DNA Banks: Detect Susceptibility to Obesity

GeneLink, Inc Announces the Filing of a U.S. Patent Application for a SNPs Based Method to Detect Susceptibility to Obesity

MARGATE, N.J.--(BW HealthWire)--June 15, 2001--GeneLink, Inc. (OTCBB:GNLK - news), The World's First Family Centered DNA Bank and Hereditary Genetic Information Service, today announced that it has filed a U.S. Patent Application through the Philadelphia office of the international law firm of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld, for GeneLink's new invention of a proprietary method to detect an individual's susceptibility to obesity.

Obesity is a condition that affects at least 70 million Americans, more than one-third of all adults and one in five children. Obesity is considered an important risk factor for the development of diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Some people are more susceptible to obesity than others.

Specifically, this genetics based obesity test (Patent Pending) is designed to measure single-nucleotide polymorphisms, or SNPs (pronounced ``snips''), which are small variations in DNA. The test looks for SNPs in several key genes that are associated with obesity.

Obesity increases one's risk of developing conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, gall bladder disease and cancer of the breast, prostate and colon. The test provides a score that can be used as a guide to determine what level of intervention or therapy would be helpful to combat or prevent the problems associated with obesity.

An attractive feature of this test is the easy and non-invasive method by which the samples are collected using the patented GeneLink DNA Collection KitŪ. Simply, the DNA material is collected by rubbing the inside of the mouth with swabs, which are then mailed to the testing laboratory. The samples are kept strictly confidential by bar coding. GeneLink has the only patented non-invasive DNA collection system in use today.

Significant opportunities exist for GeneLink to bring to market its proprietary, genetics based obesity test. This test can assist medical, health, anti-aging practitioners; weight loss management companies and nutritional companies offer both an earlier and improved approach to obesity therapies. This assessment test could be a superior solution to those companies seeking to predict their customer's genetic susceptibility to obesity.

``The Company is extremely excited to be able to bring this important new product to the weight management, health and nutritional industries. This assessment could put companies at the leading edge when it comes to developing customized formulations based on their customers genetic profile,'' says John R. DePhillipo, Chairman and CEO of GeneLink, Inc. ``The Obesity Susceptibility test is a major addition to GeneLink's other genetic assessment tests (patents pending), which include assays for estimating susceptibility to oxidative stress (OS) and oxidative stress related to skin aging. We have received an overwhelming response from major weight loss and nutritional companies seeking distribution. It is our belief that revenues from this product will begin by September 1st of this year.''
