ketones fuel fetal development. I dont even pretend to be able to understand the scientific lingo in this article but it does support a ketogenic diet in pregnancy

dr wortman's (of the my big fat diet documentary) wife stayed on a very lowcarb diet during pregnancy and had a healthy baby. Talks about safety of lowcarb diets and improvement of general health

wow, interesting! Too late for me I'm afraid, I wish I had known that decades ago.
Congrats on your pregnancy. I see your baby is due in April. Both my daughters were born in April.

hi fauve :) i wish i had known all of this with my first. We do the best we can with what we know at the time. Who knows what we'll think about all of this 10 years from now!

another md's wife went lowcarb (20g/day) to help with edema in her pregnancy. Read the comments too!

Wonderful Walnut! I'm going to want to follow this thread. So much great information.

Wow, Walnut, thanks for all the info. I have been doing my best to follow a LC diet. I am due in February with my 6th. For the most part, I am doing very well. Once a week, I allow myself a "cheat" dinner of whatever I want. Generally, that's french fries and ice cream. Haha Anyway, sometimes, at night when I can't sleep and the baby is kicking away, I worry if I'm doing the right thing by being in ketosis. Thanks for sharing your findings and I will be "watching" this post, too. Consider yourself stalked.......LMAO

right now i wish i could tolerate a cheat meal. I couldve used one yesterday :) if my carbs go i up i feel incredibly pukey. Lc is my salvation from morning sickness!

Here's another reference about one of the hormones of pregnancy that actually causes increased maternal insulin resistance to shift glucose to the baby and encourages maternal ketosis! Looks like we're designed to run on ketones during pregnancy.

HCS is the hormone that "causes
decreased use of glucose by the mother, thus
making more available for the fetus. Also, hCS
promotes the release of fatty acids from fat
depots, providing an alternative source of energy
for the mother's metabolism" (quoted from an old
anatomy and physiology textbook).

Walnut, I luuuuuuved the article/site from Dr. Jay. Awesome reading and it made so much sense. I'm thinking that's why I'm hungry all the time......I'm not eating enough fat. So, today I'm gonna try his method.

I ran out to the store yesterday to get all the ingredients for the yogurt recipe he has on his site. LOL Of course, I'm using Greek yogurt, not Turkish.
