Is there a way to search new posts for a day, or posts that have been made while one was logged out (so one doesn't have to search each forum?)

Yes, there is. You go up to the top of any page and look in the green stripe across the top. Simply click on the words New Posts and you'll get a list of posts since you were last logged on.
