My starving student diet
 

Beef from safeway (chuck roast/steak or top round): $1.50-$1.99/lb
Eggs: $2.50-$3 / 18
Cheese: $3-4 a pound.
Butter: $2.09 a pound

I buy about 12 pounds of beef, some butter, a few eggs, and occasionally some cheese. I rarely have a weekly grocery bill over $40, and most of the time it's around $30.

I've been eating like this for about six months. I have no weight-loss goals; I'm just looking to get stronger and stay healthy, and it works great.

I miss the price of things in North America. Meat here is really expensive. Everything is expensive but meat in particular. No wonder people eat so much potato.

When I was a starving student, I ate a ridiculous amount of eggs. Those at least were fairly cheap. Now that I'm a starving unemployed grad, I buy food at Iceland (frozen food specialist) where the prices are very low and I try not to think of the hormones in my beef and the suffering of my chicken because then I'd go insane.

I'll buy organic when I can afford it >_<

yes, i was going to say.. while traveling i can keep my food costs down to $2/day when eating ground beef!

Don't know where you live, dshack, but if you have a Target around, see if they have eggs. They're usually under $1.50 for a dozen (my store's regular price here in the Silicon Valley was $1.14 a couple weeks ago). Also, if you live near any ethnical stores, check their meat/chicken prices. The asian store down the street from me usually has ground beef for under $1.99/lb and chicken legs and thighs for 69 cent/lb.

Safeway is one of two grocery stores here and I know from experience that their prices suck. I buy their sale items (usually stocking up when meat and chicken are on sale) and depend on Target, Smart and Final and the local Asian store to fill in the rest. ;-) Thankfully, there's a good produce market not far from me too, so my produce is plentiful but cheap.
