 tks. this is my 1st time [i'm 72 years old] i'm chating- ever. very glad you replied.has SSRI'S EFFECTED your weight loss? going for 50 lbs ...bill2lls

Ms Arielle Thu, Jul-19-18 06:47

SSRI's are noted for slowing weight loss. But please give LC another try because you wont know until you do.

I prefer not to use SSRIs. There are other options to try, not everthing has the same level of effect. I use lots of sunlight--getting outside to just walk around, puttering. Just need 30 sumer-60 minutes winter. Or a special light.

I also looked into St Johns Wort.

Usually have 5 HTP available at all times. My son uses it every day, It is the chemical that will make seratonin.

ALso you might concider a moderate level low carb as the carb foods help to make seratonin too. Sweet potatos and beets are high quality high carb foods that Dr AMen mentions as seratonin boosters.

Lots here to think about. Perhaps do some in depth research and talk to the doctor the prescribes the SSRI.

Dr. Ken Berry has a couple of interesting videos on the subject.

Depression- What if it’s your food?

Years ago, I used the supplement sam-e, which Dr Amen recommended on a PBS special. It is something our bodies make, but less so over the course of time. It helped a lot. I no longer seem to need it, as eating keto seems to naturally improve my mood and mental functioning.

Hope you are able to find what works best for you. Good luck!

I take 3 kinds of meds for my bi-polar meds that cause weight gain and effect weight loss not to mention my statins and diabetes pills. The scale hasn't moved for me yet but I am hanging in there and doing what I am doing because I am loving the way that this WOE is making me feel plus it is taking down my BG levels to normal levels.

What Arielle was saying about tumeric, I found out that there i lots of it in yellow mustard.

Also about those statins, Barbie you should read what's been written on it's effects on women. There has been lots of conversation on that topic on this board. Many say that not only is is not effective for women but damaging.

BarbieJ925 Fri, Oct-19-18 13:14

I am afraid to go off of them because of my bipolar would start up again... Where would I find the information?

BarbieJ925 Fri, Oct-19-18 13:16

Yes, I am thinking of going off of them I was thinking you were talking about the anti-depressants....

Meme#1 Fri, Oct-19-18 13:41

No not the anti depressants, not yet maybe at a later time if you feel like you don't need them as much but gradually and with your doctor overseeing that change.

In this site to search, you first have to go to the regular 'search' at the top middle of the page, then after it takes you there- click 'advanced search' and that will bring up articles for what you can read about that has been posted here through time.

ps on a regular search like going straight to google, the drug companiees control so much that most of the articles will lead back to drug companies websites.

BarbieJ925 Fri, Oct-19-18 14:23

Thank you Meme! I will try that!!!

Barb do not mess with your bipolar meds. If you have them working well for you, stay with what is working.

Dr Daniel AMen has information in his book HEALING ADD. This is my bible for understanding brain chemicals and how they affect us emotionally, etc. He has a whole chapter devoted to bi-polar. It helped me to understand it is a rather complex issue and to make changes needs careful monitoring ( especially by you). I have several copies and I have given away copies.

Healing ADD by Dr Daniel Amen, MD

Glad the change in diet is working well for you.

Would you be willing to start a journal? If you go to the journal section , the first thread is information on how to start a journal.
