Starting a beef bone broth batch with chuck short rib bones from leftover Caldereta (Filipino beef stew). Going to do the (30 minute) acv soak this time, and this site says:

After you’ve placed your bones in your pot, pour the ACV in, then fill your pot with cold water. Then you’ll leave your pot off of the heat for at least 30 minutes. Leaving the stock pot away from heat for that 30 minutes (or even longer) prevents the heat from killing off the live cultures and enzymes in the ACV before they can do their good work. From there, add your veggies and a bit of sea salt, turn on the heat, and let it cook.

Thanks for sharing this tip. I'm about to start a chicken bone broth, so will do that first.

Got me a tray of 100 percent grass fed beef marrow bones (from whole foods) and these kept producing bubbles while on the 48 hour crock-pot low setting. Looking at the finished product in a clear ball jar, a beautiful color! I'll try it out in a couple days. Saved the bones and they're in the freezer for an experimental second batch.

re - the plain collagen powder at Bulk Barn .. It's actually Organika brand ;) ... https://organika.com/products/enhan...llagen-original. After buying a small amount at BB to try, I decided (a) I liked it and (b) if you want to buy in larger amounts, it's cheaper to buy a sealed container of the Organika brand. BB sells those, and often has "25% off supplements" sales which includes the containers of collagen (but not bulk). Just sayin' ;)

p.s. - I agree .. can't wait till they're open again, I miss the bulk spices and ground flax seed :(

Started another beef bone broth with grass fed bones from Whole Foods in the crock-pot. These come out the best, better than chicken so far.

Constantly adding water to keep up with evaporation throughout the day. Going to go for around 48 hours again (set on low).

I have been eating a couple packets of plain old Knox gelatin for a few months now, also previously used some collegan powder, still do the collagen occasionally, plus when we have boiled chicken (with the bones IN) it seems to cook down to a lovely gelintinous broth, which solids up in the refrigerator. It is only cooked for I guess a couple hours or so, maybe that is enough to at least produce gelatin. This all to battle my leaky gut, which is actually much improved

I read here https://organixx.com/how-to-make-bone-broth/ about adding a little bit of something acidic (which I see others are doing) and then cooking slowly. Apparently there are more benefits to the broth than only the gelatin.

"Because the bones boil for so long, the collagen inside the bones is released into the bone broth and turns to gelatin when bone broth is cooled. I guess ours is a 'winner' even though it's not cooked for hours and hours! LOL

So I added a little lemon juice to my little batch of soup made from a chicken thigh with the leg attatched and am going to cook it in the microwave and then chill it and see if it produces gelatin. I'm trying 4 minutes at 30 percent power after previously cooking it at full power. I actually already DRANK about half of it so maybe I should try another experiment JUST with the bones! LOL

I'm eating chicken wings today! I love wings, and of course I'm saving the bones. Putting them in the freezer, and when my freezer actually has a little more room in it I'll put the bones in the crockpot and make some broth. I add some ACV to the water and usually some garlic powder too.

Yesterday I made a version of "jello jigglers" - some of my orange-flavored electrolyte powder mixed the unsweetened gelatin powder. Poured them into silicon molds and placed in the fridge. Once they had firmed up I popped them out of the molds and ate them as a "jello jiggler" treat :D

Here's what my jello jigglers looked like. This batch had a tbsp of heavy cream added to it to give them sort of a "creamsicle" taste.
