Hot Cross Buns

Hot Cross Buns! Hot Cross Buns!
One a penny,
Two a penny,
Hot Cross Buns!
If you have no daughters,
Pray give them to your sons!
One a penny,
Two a penny,
Hot Cross Buns!

Traditional on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Their origin somewhat clouded in history but the symbolism of the cross is there for all to see. The eating of the spiced bun is probably pagan with the medieval church adding the cross.

I love the buns and have to admit that I have had one today.

You won't find them in the carb counters but for those that are tempted, here are the numbers for a typical bought bun from Marks & Spencer:

Per Bun

Cal. 170
Protein: 5.5
Carbohydrate: 33.8
of which sugars: 9.5
Fat: 1.5
Fibre: 1.5
Sodium: 0.17

The advertising on the pack makes a point of showing that it is less than 3% fat. What they do not say of course is that by reducing the fat they have increased the carbs by at least 4 compared to its higher fat cousin bought from Safeway. (I am saving that for tomorrow! :D )

Have a happy and holy Eastertide.

Tradition

On my father's side of the family (probably from the Irish side) making of Hot Cross buns on Palm Sunday and having them each morning during holy week, has been a tradition for at least 5 generations. If Karen can help out, I would love to find a low carb alternative. I think its do-able. thoughts?
