Carbs in Splenda
Sorry if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find it in a search.
I'm in Canada, and we have Splenda in the big boxes. According to Atkins, one should count one carb per packet of Splenda used, but how does that translate to the powdered Splenda? It's a straight substitution for sugar, according tot he box - if you use 1 cup of sugar, use 1 cup of Splenda. But what should the carb count be, say per cup or per tbsp or tsp? It doesn't say on the box. |
I've heard there is 24 carbs in a cup of Splenda.
|
Yup!! 24 grams per cup. The Splenda itself has no carbs, but the filler used, maltodextrin, has the carbs.

Thanks! That's actually about half what I thought it might be, which puts some desserts on the menu.

Here's some general information about Splenda
SPLENDA*Granular contains maltodextrine and sucralose. Please see the nutritional information below: Nutrition Information (Serving size 1tsp (5mL/0.5g) Energy ...................2 calories(8 kj) Protein.................................0 g Fat......................................0 g Carbohydrate.....................0.5 g Sucralose............................6 mg SPLENDA* Packets contain dextrose, maltodextrine and sucralose. Please see the nutritional information below: Nutrition Information (Serving size 1g packet) Energy................. 4 calories(17 kj) Protein................................0 g Fat.....................................0 g Carbohydrate...................... 1 g Sucralose..........................12 mg The packets are the equivalent to 2 tsp. sugar which is why you need more bulk Splenda to sweeten. The above information is from the Canadian website. Keep in mind that carbohydrates under 1 gram per serving have to be declared in Canada while in the USA carbohydrates under 1 gram per serving can be declared as zero. Here's some information on using the combination of Canadian Sugar Twin and Splenda

I had found this in another post...I can't exactly remember where...but I have it saved in my favorites.
> > Hi Gang, To save money, I buy all my Splenda in packet form, since Costco carries a box of 700 packets for less than $14. This is the equivalent of 29 cups of granular Splenda. There are only 2.29 cups of Splenda in a box of granular and it retails for US$4.30 per box on the Splenda website (including shipping) which means 29 cups would cost US$54.45. So buying it at Costco saves me a whopping $40 each time! I hate stopping to do the conversions when I'm using the packets, though, so I came up with this handy dandy conversion chart and thought it might be useful to someone else. So here it is: Code:-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Splenda Conversion Chart 1 C = 16 T = 48 tsp = 24 packets 3/4 C = 12 T = 36 tsp = 18 packets 1/2 C = 8 T = 24 tsp = 12 packets 1/3 C = 5.3T = 16 tsp = 8 packets 1/4 C = 4T = 12 tsp = 6 packets 1/8 C = 2T = 6 tsp = 3 packets 1T = 3 tsp = 1.5 packet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I hope someone finds this information useful. I know it's saved me a lot of forehead furrowing while I'm in the middle of a recipe. xo Dig |
EXCELLENT info from a fellow BC'er :)
I really like the Sugar Twin idea, too -fewer carbs for the same sweetening power is a great deal. |
Thanks for this really useful information. It's now officially filed in my Word document for LC tips.
