depression meds

Have you noticed any specific medication that makes you gain regardless of how well you lo carb?

I think a lot of antidepressants have weight gain as a side effect unfortunately.

Even while doing lo carb or dieting? I always thought maybe it was because it changed an appetite. KWIM? So you ate more and gained that way.

Symphony, I've found that it depends on why you're on them in the first place as well as your personality.

FOr instance, when my DH is on them he gains weight. why? because he releaxes more and then eats more. Whereas, anyone who eats when they're stressed, would eat less and thus probably lose weight.

However, messing with the serotonin can, by itself, mess with the metabolism of food. I don'tknow why...but the brain and stomach and skin are all connected somehow

I'm on a MESS of pills that seem to make it hard for me to lose weight. An antidepressant, 2 blood pressure pills, and Lyrica (I have fibromyalgia) seem to make weight loss VERY slow for me. It sucks, but I need the pills so I just have to suffer.

Yeah, any of those can cause issues. I know Lyrica is a big one to inhibit weight loss... or rather, causes weight gain. :(

I would always lose weight when I first went on an SSRI (Prozac, Zoloft) and then some weeks later, the carb cravings would kick in with a vengeance and I would gain it back. The carb cravings were one of the worst side effects for me, along with tiredness. 20 years ago when I was much thinner, I first tried Prozac and I don't remember it being such a concern. More recently and much heavier (and presumably more insulin resistant) I don't know how a low carb diet would have affected that because I couldn't even have imagined managing it. Practically all I wanted to eat was sugar.

The SNRIs which include Wellbutrin, Effexor, and Cymbalta are considered to be less likely to cause weight gain. Wellbutrin made me feel crazy mean and Effexor gave me hives. Cymbalta wasn't even out yet when I was on antidepressants. (I don't take them any more since I started cutting down on calcium and supplementing magnesium. Got the idea from this website: http://george-eby-research.com/html...on-anxiety.html)

I would think that a low carb diet is going to most likely benefit those who feel good from an SNRI. Those who respond to SSRIs may feel the need to eat more carbs to affect their serotonin levels. I've been taking 5-HTP for that reason too.

I don't have time to look for the reference now, but within the last year there was an interesting experiment done on earthworms, who apparently share many of our genes, which indicated that serotonin itself precipitated weight loss (rather than affecting appetite).
