How to Use Blood Glucose Meter
Hello Everybody! I'm a newbie and I've been "lurking" in here for about a week. Played around with CAD about 10 years ago and stumbled upon this site and decided to get the Heller's more recent books and give it a try (after calorie restriction and intensive exercise for last month with not much results).
I just bought a blood glucose meter because I was curious how AS would effect my blood sugar - mainly my sugar free coffee creamer, caffeine, sugar free gum and my favorite - Good Earth's Sweet and Spicy tea (that actually doesn't have any sugar or additives, less than one carb per cup) just cinnamon oil which as a sweet taste. And I remember reading on here somewhere that the meter was the best determiner of your body's reaction. My question is how should I use this now? If my body does dump insulin into my blood stream in reaction to AS. Will that show up in my blood sugar test? How long after a meal should I test? Sorry so wordy. Thanks so much in advance for any advice you can give!!! |
Your blood glucose meter will check blood sugars only--not insulin response.
The usual way to use a meter is Morning fasting 1 hour post parandial (after meals) 2 hour post parandial (after meals) You can always use your meter to check on how certain foods impact your blood sugar. Those reading would be more often such as: 15 minute post parandial x4 30 minutes post parandial x4 1 hour post parandial x2 That would be 4 hours of blood sugars. Good luck! Progress not perfection. Thanks so much cnmlisa! I was afraid of that. I'm such a technical person that I was hoping for some concrete evidence of my insulin response to these foods. I haven't really felt any craving or weight loss difference when I eat these things although my weight loss has been on the slow side (about 2 lbs. in 2 weeks). I suppose I should try cutting them out altogether boo hoo :( Thanks again!!
