When is it safe to start running again?

Any runners here, who are (or were previously) too heavy to run? Im 183cm 6ft tall and 55 years old - former marathon runner. Diet is in progress and I’m on my way down from nearly 300lbs. Hoping to restart slow running on treadmill at 245lbs.

Very interested to compare to what other runners are doing, or to hear of other people’s experience of restarting their running careers.

I am super motivated to get running again but don't want to do myself a mischief!

(Yes I know there’s an exercise section here but there are no recent posts so I figured on using general support section instead.)

Have you considered running in a pool? Minimal danger of falls. Easy on the joints, blessed release from gravity, water gives a good resistance while you are building up those running muscles and reflexes.

The spirit may be strong, but the knees and ankles have something to say about the process. You might consider checking in with an orthopedic practice to get evaluation of your hips and knees, and get their advice.

Good luck, and congratulations on your progress. Your summer is going to be so much better this time around because of what you’ve accomplished.
