Please Vote On Forum Idea

A few members have been toying with the idea of forming a Recipe Club. The logistics are still being worked out, but this is the general concept:

Recipes will be submitted to be reviewed (personal recipes, cookbooks etc.)

One recipe would be chosen each week and posted

The recipe will be posted on the same day each week (probably the beginning of the week)

Members make the recipe and come back with their ratings and/or suggested modifications

The recipes will be held in a Master "Recipe Club" file.

It's not expected that you would have to do this every week. There are obvious limitations, but we need to get an idea of the general interest.

Opinions are welcome. This is a great way to fight food boredom! Are we up for this? :cheer:

I should also have mentioned that you don't have to submit recipes in order to participate. The more participation and fun, the better. ;)

Hi Wanda the Recipe Club sounds like fun. I would like to make sure that when someone puts in a Recipe that they would add all the Nutrition Counts if possible.

Thanks. Rich!!!

We're planning to add the nutrition information with each recipe, and any variations that we come up with. There are several tools, including MasterCook, FitDay, CalorieKing and others which will help ensure the most accurate counts for each recipe possible.

Okay, but....

I have a question: What would be the advantage of the new recipe club over the established Low Carb recipes found via the orange menu bar at the top of the screen?

I've found some great recipes there already and there is a place to comment on your results, tweaks, etc.

Not sure what the value added might be? But interested in seeing new recipes anyway.

What we're trying to do is simply to increase the enthusiasm for making your own tasty LC food. I've said in a couple other threads that, in my opinion, boredom with the food is the main reason people break with whatever food plan they adopt. I realize that there are great swaths of this forum entirely devoted to recipes and discussion, but what we're trying to do is an entertaining way to get people excited about cooking and about low-carb ways to enjoy your meals.

That, and it's fun! :D

Hi Pokey:

The difference would be that we are all doing it together. It's a great way to get to know people since it will be a little more interactive. It also gives some members the incentive to try different recipes. I know there are lots of recipes I'll try in The Recipe Club that I might not normally cook. It's a way of adding variety to our repertoire.

It's like working out at the gym with a buddy as opposed to doing it alone. ;)

Also, the Recipe Club essentially ensures that people will try a submitted recipe. There's no guarantee that anyone will try a recipe out when it's posted on the Member's Recipes link. Some people might like feedback on their creations.

I'm sure I could think of more reasons, but this is a start....

Oops, posted at the same time as Scott...

i am always looking for new ideas. i just don't know how much different the club would be that the recipe section? seems like we would be spreading ourselves out more. how about doing something to get our recipe section to have more action/excitment

I think Wanda answered it well here...

There are some recipes that get tons of hits and that's how you can tell that they're popular. This would bring more focus by the activity and interaction, and help people who would be normally shy to try different things encouragement.

Some folks are afraid of spending the time and money on something that turns out to be a bomb. Because the recipes will be tested and rated, it eliminates that fear.

Learning to cook and think in LC is tough for lots of people. This will help them.

After stating time and time again that trying new recipes (and getting excited about the good ones) is what keeps me motivated, I'm definitely IN on this idea! I'd love to have the incentive to stick with the pledge I've made to myself to try one new LC recipe/week.

Thanks you guys!

This sounds like a great idea and I would certainly like to participate.

However, I can foresee a problem with the fact that I'm in the UK, and might not be able to obtain some of the ingredients that may be required. However, I suppose the challenge for me would be to find an appropriate alternative and submit it as a recipe modification!

That's one way you could do it or you could get substitution ideas from the "club" before making the recipe. Either way would work well.

BTW, what kind of items aren't available in the UK?

I probably should have clarified this more - specialised low carb ingredients are quite difficult to come by in the UK. Splenda has only just arrived on these shores - in granular and tablet form only at the moment - liquid Splenda has yet to make it across the pond.

Another example are Atkins products, which are only available through internet sites - the UK-based sites have a fairly limited range, and to buy direct from the US can be expensive postage wise. It's the same with DaVinci Syrups and Walden Farm Products.

I think the only 'low carb' products that have been quite easy to buy in the UK, are sugar-free chocolate :) and sugar-free jelly. Apart from that, there certainly aren't any low carb products available in the mainstream supermarkets, health food stores etc.

However, all other fresh, natural ingredients are readily available, so no problems there - except an English/American translation may be required for some things - i.e., swede/rutabago, spring onions/scallions etc.
