Daily Accountability Discussion - July

Starting this thread to keep myself accountable. I have a lot of weight I want to lose.

Join me if you are struggling or are looking for support. If you are doing great and staying on plan, I would love to hear from you too, as it will help to see success!

I will start us off. I’ve been struggling for a couple of months. My job has been super busy for some time and I am exhausted.

I was able to resist sugary junk brought to work to celebrate a couple birthdays. It was brought in on Tues and was still there on Wed. It was on a table right next to my cube. I resisted! I am proud of myself. I’ve had six good days in a row of clean eating. I have to remain firm. This morning I saw a new low!

How are you doing?

Here are my numbers for this month.

Hi...I thought I'd add some thoughts and perhaps a dose of possibly unwanted realism. I've done Atkins SOOOO many times over the last 12 years, usually with good success but never reaching my ultimate goal. I would always do Atkins induction strictly at first, but soon got looser with little cheats here and there, and my weight loss would go up and down a lot (little bits, but never a straight line down). I got down to the low 140s and stayed there for a year with careful, mostly Atkins type eating, but it all went to heck about 13 months ago, and it was up up up again over that year until mid June when I finally said enough is enough, I have to address this yet again and get my eating under control.

I'm now at the end of 5 weeks of induction, this is day 35. I have NEVER done Atkins this perfectly before: Not a smidgen of sugar, nothing at all not on Atkins induction, carbs have been consistently 10 or fewer, calories have been mostly under 1,000 just because how I'm eating makes it end up that way. I've had spurts of good exercise along with the perfect diet. I've also done a 24-hour fast once each week. I expected faster weight loss, to be honest.

RESULT: I've lost 7 pounds in 5 weeks/35 days, and the weight loss has been excruciatingly low (a bit fast at first, which is typical, then slow as a turtle). I tend to "hang" around a particular weight for days and days before finally dropping down to the next lower pound. This has occasionally been frustrating, maddening, but I'm not allowing it to be discouraging. This appears to be how it is losing weight, and perhaps this is more the case when you have less to lose to reach your goal weight. My weight goal was/is 15 to 20 pounds. That elusive "last" 20 pounds. So yes, perhaps that is slower at that point. The only PUZZLING thing is that I've been at this point before (with 15-20 lbs to lose), and it has never been so slow despite the fact that I'm doing Atkins better than I've ever done it. So perhaps being so rigid with Atkins doesn't help after all??

All I can say is that you just have to be consistent and stick with it, which I'm motivated to do. I do think I'll reach my goal, but only time will tell when. I can't really predict it at all because of how long I seem to stay at each pound before losing more. There is zero fast loss any more, that seems clear.

I've had to temper expectations of weight loss speed over the years, and especially now. Here's my list of weights to show how sloooowwww it can be even when you do everything right.

On a more POSITIVE note, this 7 pounds loss has made a substantial difference in how my clothes fit, and how I look. It's clear I've lost weight. I can get into pants and tops I couldn't comfortably wear 7 pounds ago. So that's the GOOD.

Hi CMCM, thanks for your reply. I appreciate how difficult this is and I am always open for helpful realism. It is great how you are being so dedicated, and yes, it is working for you. Thank you for cheering me on!

Ms Arielle Sun, Jul-21-19 12:47

At some point we need to understand this change in food is FOREVER. DANDR points this out, with other cautions.

Ya, I have struggled for almost twenty years, with many hiccups along the way. My goal now is to thwart those hiccups so I can stay on course.

Having like minded support is very important. You might like the 90 day change your habit for more inspiration and accountability. Do check it out and see if its for you.

Hi Ms Arielle, nice to meet you.

Yes, you are right. This a a Way of Eating, nothing else. And it must be forever.

Thanks for the tip on the 90 day thread, I will check it out.

Hey there all! My mom couldn’t loos on Atkins, but I lost about 100 pounds. I think a huge difference was that I didn’t drink alcohol prior to my attempt; she drank low carb alcohol even during the attempt. That seems to matter. I’m back to really trying to control my carb intake. I’m not being militant like when I lost all my weight in 5 months, but I’m doing a good job. Here is hoping it sticks! My lowest was 205, I’m trying to get back there. I’m 6’1 so at 205 that puts me at a size 12. I’m happy there.

7/1/19 = 229.4
7/2/19 = 228.4
7/3/19 = 227.8
7/4/19 = 226.8
7/5/19 = 227.0
7/6/19 = 226.8
7/7/19 = 226.6
7/8/19 = 227.8

7/12/19 = 226.4
7/13/19 = 226.4

CaCO – you made it! Glad you found me. You are such an inspiration! (You should change your stats to reflect your highest weight! Take credit for what you did!

I would think drinking alcohol would have a lot to do with losing. Isn’t alcohol sugar? I don’t drink at all and haven’t for quite some time. I used to only have some sparkling wine at our holiday dinner with family, now, I don’t have any. It triggers migraines for me.

I am down again today. I have to get some treats for my team mate’s birthday today. I am going to get some fresh fruit, and maybe some kind of muffins I don’t like! Easier to avoid if I don’t like them. Happy Monday everyone!

Ms Arielle Mon, Jul-22-19 18:36

CaCO, Definitely alcohol makes a difference, which is why it is not listed for induction , nor level two. So you did well do follow the rules AND succeeded.

I marvel that real people can actually remove 100, even 200 pounds, what a very long road.

Im planning on making the complete journey this time.

Ms. Arielle; yes it can happen, but it takes a big commitment. I started from a Rob Lowe commercial about Atkins. He said to give it two weeks, so I was militant in my under 20 net carbs. No deviation. I was actually trying to prove to the universe that this was just one other diet that wasn’t going to work, but I would give it my all for two weeks. I lost 25 pounds in that time and I wasn’t hungry because I ate without worrying about calories. I just ate different things.

That gave me the motivation to see it through. I didn’t make exceptions for birthday cake, I flat out told people I was allergic to bread. That was my mindset, I’m allergic, I can’t have that. Then poof, 5 months and 89 pounds later I finally eased up and had carbs again, but as a size 12/14, not a size 22/24. Here we are a year later and some of the weight has come back, and while I’m
not as militant, I do make better choices, and I do make exceptions for birthday cake now :-)

Yesterday I had Mexican, no chips or bread or rice, but I think the salt content did a number on me, lol! Oh well, back to the grindstone.

sosumi Tue, Jul-23-19 05:32

CaCO3 – you are doing good. Yay. I knew you lost your weight fast, but had no idea you lost 25 lbs in your first two weeks! That is amazing! Good job enjoying Mexican food without the filler carbs!

Ms. Arielle – I believe we can all do it! Stick around and we can cheer each other on and do it together!

Yes, I love the feeling of not being hungry when on this plan! If I get hungry, I eat.

I had a great day yesterday! I had to run into the grocery store on the way to work to pick up birthday treats for my team mate at work, so our team could celebrate. I got a package of cut up berries, mostly strawberries with a few blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries tossed in. I also got some tiny muffins and some mini cookies that that did not appeal to me but the others would like.

While I was there, I exchanged smiles with another shopper and said good morning. (Something about shopping in the early morning, everyone has more energy.) Anyway, she said to me, “You look very pretty.” I was blown away and graciously thanked her. She has no idea how she made my day and heck, made my week! It felt fantastic!

I had hit a new low on the scale, was wearing a new to me blouse, and I got a fantastic compliment from a complete stranger! Woohoo! Floated the rest of the day!

Oh yea, and I did good with the treats, having some of the berries and enjoying the company.

I have to post and run this morning. Had something not LC for dinner, ack. Just a momentary bobble. I got in lots of walking yesterday, as I went shopping at Costco.

I am having lunch with a friend today. It is supposed to be beautiful out, warm but no humidity, so we will try to eat outside. And we will walk to the restaurant.

Hi Sosumi and Caco - it’s your old friend Kit from you know where. Here are my numbers for the month. I’m gearing up for minor surgery on the 31st so I’m not too hard l-core right now. (I just feel weird about being in ketosis for surgery) but I’m doing what I can. I’m looking forward to seeing results of others using basic low carb/keto as I prefer to avoid any extremes and do as little as possible to lose. That way I have room to adjust down (or up if talking exercise) when the weightloss stops. But right now my biggest challenge is just sticking to my plan and not succumbing to junk food.
