ADAPT Dietary Intake Study
 
Just wondering if anyone here is participating in this study by Tufts University under the low carb option. Unfortunately, as I live in the UK, I'm not eligible to take part.

To describe the dietary intake of followers of a wide variety of dietary patterns, including no diet at all, trying to eat healthy, and other specific diets such as Mediterranean, vegan, vegetarian, Paleo, low-carb, and others; also, to capture data on the psycho-biological, cultural, social, and environmental predictors of long-term dietary adherence to healthy dietary patterns in adults. I've been participating, just in case it might add some "scientific" credibility to low carb. I just finished charting 3 days of food intake for the study. It really does make me question how accurate or honest people are when filling it out. Since I track my food on Cronometer most days and I eat pretty simple fare it is pretty easy for me to fill it out but I wonder about other people. I think I identified my diet as low carb high protein.

I just signed up, too. I'll be delighted to answer their questionnaires, which should be pretty easy since I already keep daily records of what I eat--and that goes back a long way.

I've been extremely disappointed in a previous study (forget the name--but I think y'all know what it is) that completely ignored low-carb as a dietary pattern in tracking the long-term maintenance of participants.

Today the person I've been "coaching" told me that medical experts say nobody can sustain a significant weight loss, so why try? Baloney, says I!!

Let's bend the stats in our favor, shall we?

Barbara, sorry OP for side track, a friend has diligently followed a low calorie SAD style diet for a number of months. Always hungry. Recently, She has been adding back foods and ignoring doctors advice.

Always hungry on 1500 calories of SAD is not sustainable either. Lol

Well, Ms Arielle, as most of us know around here, low-cal/low-fat is about the least effective and most unsustainable diet plan ever. As to 1500 calories...

Often referred to in LC books is the infamous Ancel Keys 1944 study with conscientious objectors submitted to a "semi-starvation" diet of 1570 calories. Some of them apparently went "psychotic." (Good Calories, Bad Calories, p. 254)

In fact, I think it's somewhat ironic that the ADAPT study is located in the Jean Mayer School at Tufts, since Mayer was the instigator and perpetrator of the "eat less, move more" theory of weight management which has yet to be overthrown.

Let's overthrow it now. :lol:
