Less Weight to Lose=Longer Time to Lose It

Hi Ya'll,

Just wondering if the less weight you need to lose, the longer it will take you. I'm starting my second week of Induction, and I haven't really weighed myself but once, and I was at 180, instead of 184, but I fluctuate between 180 and 185 anyway when I wasn't doing this.

I feel great, and it seems as if my clothes are fitting a little better. I haven't really been weighing myself, cuz I'm a little afraid that if I do, and I haven't lost a lot, then I'll be kinda discouraged. I know, though, that I haven't lost more than 3 or 4 pounds probably, and lots of people lose more like 7 or 8 during Induction it seems from the Forum messages. Is this because they are heavier? I'm just curious.

I've kinda already been planning on staying on Induction longer than just the two weeks. I figure the longer I stay on it, the better I'll be at eating a restricted carb diet, so once I do start eating more, I won't be as likely to over do it. But one of the reasons that I am doing Atkin's is that it seems like everyone who goes on it loses weight.

Ok, well anyway, just curious about what other people who maybe don't have as much to lose think about it. I have a goal of losing 30 pounds, however, to reach the highest end of my healthy weight range I only need to lose 15 pounds.

Thanks for the info!

Lots of Southern Love,
Alli

The general rule is that you will lose 10% of the weight you have to lose in the first two weeks of induction. The rate then slows to 5% a month. These are just broad estimates, of course.

Yes, in general those with more to lose will lose more quickly. This just makes sense since a higher body fat would lead to more fat metabolism. I believe that's the science behind it anyway. Of course there are tons of other factors including dieting history, lean body mass, activity level, etc. that will affect your metabolism.

If you look in Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution, there is a little chart that shows the average amount of loss depending on how much you have to lose. In fact, here it is: What is your degree of metabolic resistance?
I think four or five pounds during induction is just about right... you're already at 10%.

I know some people think of this as a quick weight loss tool, which it can be, but weight loss is much healthier (and long-lasting) at a snail's pace anyway.

Good luck! :)

I had 26lbs to lose and I lost 4lbs during induction, and anywhere from 1-3lbs every week since. Mostly it's been 1-2lbs a week. I try to exercise (aerobic weight training for 1 hour) 2-3X weekly (I have 2 babies so it's hard). I lost 3lbs last week after I started taking green tea extract capsules. It really seems to speed things up (I didn't change my carbs or exercise more-it seems that the green tea helped, but it's too soon to tell.)
It depends a lot on your metabolism and how carb-sensitive you are. Men tend to lose more on induction cuz they have more muscle, therefore a faster metabolism.
You'll see a jump in your weight loss when you start excerising.
Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the feedback

Well, when I went to the doctor yesterday I weight 178, so I have lost about 6 pounds so far, I'm on day 10 of Induction. I've been exercising since I started, so I'm just trying to keep it up, so that I can keep on losing.

Congratulations! That is very good weight loss. I only lost about 4 pounds on induction and over the last 6 months I averaged less than a pound a week-but I don't care!

You will find that the weight comes off in clumps. For a week or two there will be nothing, then you will lose a solid pound or two all at once. Just be aware of that so you do not get discouraged.

MEASURE yourself. You will lose inches galore.
