Omnivorous, orthodox conservatives have a duty to stand up to this food wokeism

Is there anything that liberal Conservative MPs won’t do to pander to trendy causes? If the new initiative “The Vegan Conservatives”, set up by 10 of the party’s MPs, is anything to go by, then the answer is no. Their spokesperson, Andrew Boff, is “thrilled that so many Conservative MPs are going vegan for January”. He claims: “At the heart of conservatism is a desire to conserve and protect our environment. Moving towards a plant-based food system is critical if we are to prevent dangerous climate change, reduce pandemic risk, and protect animals.” He goes on: “The modern vegan movement was born here in the UK, and as Vegan Conservatives we want to build on, and expand, this proud British tradition.”

Orthodox, omnivorous conservatives – once we have recovered our equilibrium – should be robust in condemnation. We should not be afraid to point out that livestock grazing is a vital part of the planet’s carbon cycle and that Britain, with our world-class ability to grow grass, is protecting the environment by sequestering megatons of carbon into our soil each year.

This is in stark contrast to the rainforest burning, wildlife destroying monoculturalists who deplete soils and expend irreplaceable water supplies to supply Big Food with the raw materials to supply Boff and his friends with their soya burgers and almond milk lattes. Their misplaced concern for the protection of farm animals in British fields will lead indirectly to millions of animals across the world being sacrificed so that they can eat a “plant-based diet”.

We should use the publicity caused by this outbreak of food-wokeism in the Tory party to have a serious debate about diet. Because Covid-19 has exposed a glaring deficiency in our immune systems. We have some of the worst Covid death statistics in the world. One of the reasons we have had so many heart-breaking losses and unprecedented restrictions on our liberties is that there are too many middle-aged adults suffering from obesity and type-2 diabetes. It is the pandemic that dares not speak its name.

We now spend more on treating obesity related problems than we do on the police. And that is a result of eating too many carbohydrates and polyunsaturated vegetable oils and not enough saturated animal fats and green vegetables. Big Food makes us ill and Big Pharma cures us. Veganism exacerbates this cycle.

One of China’s responses to the pandemic, incidentally, was to tell their people to consume 300g of dairy products each day to boost immune resistance. An entirely logical response that would once have been part of the Tory armoury, before they became obsessed by neo-liberal gesture politics and afflicted by a strange myopia when it comes to metabolic health.

It's true. And it's deliberate. Those vegan "milks" are horribly overpriced and have very little real food value. But the profit must be amazing.
