"The Abs Diet for Women" by David Zinczenko with Ted Spiker ($24.95 hardbound, $15.95 paperback).

If you haven't heard of "The Abs Diet for Women" by David Zinczenko with Ted Spiker ($24.95 hardbound, $15.95 paperback), then you haven't been watching television lately. Zinczenko has been on the talk-show circuit, telling about the life-changing effects the diet can have on anyone brave enough to try it.

And his efforts apparently have paid off. "The Abs Diet" recently was selected by Consumer Reports as one of the top four diet books, and it's near the top of the New York Times best-seller list.

"The Abs Diet for Women" is based on "The Abs Diet," with a focus on exercises and foods especially helpful for women to get a healthier body.

Zinczenko promises to give readers "the lean, flat belly everyone wants" through a nutrition and exercise program. And in six weeks, the abs are "going to show," he writes.

Zinczenko, who is editor-in-chief of Men's Health magazine, says that in recent surveys both men and women listed a flat abdomen as the "ultimate symbol of sex appeal." Coincidentally, researchers have discovered that a flat, firm belly is "the single most significant step you can take to stay healthy for life."

The diet is not low-carb, low-fat or low anything, Zinczenko writes, but it "lets you eat foods you crave and never feel hungry or deprived."

He recommends that dieters eat only the 12 "power foods," which he lists as almonds (and other nuts), beans and legumes, spinach and other green vegetables, dairy foods (fat-free or low-fat milk, yogurt and cheese), instant oatmeal (unsweetened), eggs, turkey and other lean meats, peanut butter, olive oil, whole-grain breads and cereals, extra-protein (whey) powder and raspberries (or other berries).

He also lets dieters eat anything they want for one meal a week, in addition to exercising, beginning the third week of the six-week diet. The exercise regimen consists of 20 minutes of full-body workouts three days a week, including strength training, brisk walks and abdomen workouts.

The book has 111 pages of exercise photos, 27 pages of recipes, three weeks' worth of meal plans and a grocery shopping list.

It's filled with nearly everything you need to be successful to get six-pack abs in an easy-to-follow plan.

There's a whole lot of low-carb foods in that list. I eat most of those either daily or at least two to three times a week!

But I would still be interested in the book - I haven't quite got the abs I want yet - they're still hiding under the last inch or two of fat...
