Thanks Janet!!! The more we can support and maybe prevent ADD and the whole autism spectrum the better!!!

Watching The Magic Pill again on Netflix on a quiet holiday, adding the link to this thread because of the Honolulu study of Ketogenic Diet for autism and the two children who improved.

Just started reading Dr. David Perlmutter's book Brain Maker: The Power of Gut Microbes to Heal and Protect Your Brain–for Life (2015), and in the introduction:

And then there's Autism, which has surged seven - to eight - fold just in the past 15 yerars, making this study truly a modern - day epidemic.

...

then

Now for the good news: New, leading-edge science coming from the most well-respected institutions around the world is discovering that to an extraordinary degree, brain health and, on the flip side, brain diseases, are dictated by what goes on in the gut. That's right: what's taking place in your intestines today is determining your risk for any number of neurological conditions.

And, chapter 5 is titled

Autism and the Gut
On the Frontiers of Brain Medicine

Thank you Janet for the reminder. I do need to watch The Pill, need a quiet moment to focus.

s9--looks like I need to read Perlmutters book. He had a great program on PBS, but I dont recall he goes into such detail about ADD/gut. I do understand the importance of gut health. Just not clear about how to know if when the gut is in perfect health....

JEY100 Mon, May-28-18 03:21

Martin noticed the Brain-gut connection in the little girl in The Magic Pill. Her chronic constipation reversed after being on the Diet for a few weeks. It was in the long list of her symptoms and then the improvements, but definitely not a focus for the parents. Although odd, the older sister has celiac and you would think the household wouldn’t have grain products, but that was the foundation for the younger one's diet. Perfect gut health wasn’t a goal, but the change in foods quickly changed digestion for a few of the subjects. No reflux, stomach aches, normal bowel habits, standard signs of a digestion in working order....there was no testing the microbiome or taking any supplements, not even yogurt since no dairy.

I watched it last week and found it very interesting and glad that they are letting this out to the public.

One of the most dramatic things that happened to me with LC is that all heartburn went away within about three days. Before that it was literally shooting out of my mouth in the middle of the night leaving me to have to try and sleep leaning back on three pillows to keep it down, it was miserable.

Ms Arielle Mon, May-28-18 12:00

Step father had heartburn issues his whole adult life. .....ended with cancer and that treatment left him sitting in a chair for the last 5 years.

SAD.imho.

This one mentions autism spectrum disorder (ASD) twice:

The connection betweden gut and autism is an interesting paper. Officiating the findings of moms dealing with autistic children.

One of my early solutions was to not let a fork for each food be an issue; or if a fork became unacceptable, just have another handy. Small potatos. I looked at the bigger picture of developing self-worth as more valuable.

Then pushed for wider food choices, a constant effort. Generally foods for packed lunch is limited for MANY reasons. Each food needs to meet a requirement. DS has specific rules he follows with a reason for each.

Getting such a child to expand food choices has obvious challenges. But over the years I have pushed the limits , and I do think he has a wider liking for foods than if I had just caved to every objection.

I also know when he really limits his foods, something else is off in his life. Like other areas need to be flowing smoothly for him to have an expanded menu.

Thankfully he tends to be a ketogenic eater, with the occassional need for 4 baked potatos at once, or a large bowl of oatmeal.

Every pc of the puzzle is helpful.

Growing up, I know my parents had a huge influence on what I ate, what I tried to see if I'd like it. It's a great responsibility.

Ms Arielle Tue, May-29-18 15:44

My goal has been to try a 1 tap bite of a food. Tastebuds change. You might miss out on a new favorite food if not tried at every opportunity.

It is said that its something like 15 tastes before the food is acceptable.

I put Brain Maker down because I wanted to read them on order, so now I'm reading Perlmutter's 2013 Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar--Your Brain's Silent Killers. This one is focused like a missile on gluten, and not only those with celiac disease. A few cases of his where children with ADHD got better fast by first checking their gluten levels, finding them high, restricting them from their diet, and they got better. One with tourette's syndrome also got better by quitting gluten.

THANK YOU!!

Gluten in in more grains than most people realize. Even I use it in my LC baking.

And hidden in many ready made products, too.

Good thing I like reading labels!
