Also, Atkins did not have access to a hosptial/university that could do the necessary controlled scientific trials that he knew were necessary to prove his ideas, which is why he collaborated with Westman.

I hadn't noticed when I posted this yesterday that under the video and then under the photos of the books are links to some of his more notable studies, including low carb for PCOS, Heartburn, fatty liver, IBS and the multi-author summary Low Carb as primary treatment for Diabetes. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25287761

The 5 page copy of the Clinic Diet as published in Why We Get Fat is also posted. Print this out, watch the video and you have the same plan and advice I received five years ago. It works  if you follow it

Has anyone purchased the adapt products?

JEY100 Sun, Jan-31-16 09:10

I haven't as I don't need extra fat and hope to remove some from my body stores first. Great for athletes, some members of the support group have bought them and are pleased with taste.

Here is a wonderful new Success Video from a woman following Dr Westman's plan: https://www.facebook.com/Melanieslo...?type=2&theater

Melanie leads a LC support group in West Virgina (but only 1 1/2 hours from DC) with Mark Cucuzzella MD.

I love sugar snap peas and am surprised they are on the food list!

JEY100 Sun, Jan-31-16 13:55

It's that sugar in the name :) like green beans, only 6g carbs per cup and 2 of those are fiber. If you want a program to prevent hunger while Reducing binging, the rules to this one are strict enough (no nuts, no alcohol, and limits on cheese and dairy...it removes all trigger foods) yet gives you as much food from a long list as you want to eat. Butter on those snap peas and olive oil on a salad help. To start, eat three meals and snacks until you can can recognize "real hunger" and then eat only when hungry, stop when full.

JeanM Sun, Jan-31-16 15:15

Right now I am focusing on eating to satiety for 30 days with no rules or restrictions in hopes to break the binge cycle. I am eating low carb but have almonds when I feel like a binge is coming on. Westman's plan looks good, but I prefer 3-4 tbl of cream daily for coffee. I could easily use less cheese and mayo than his plan allows though. Do you think swapping out more cream for less cheese or mayo would be a problem?

JEY100 Mon, Feb-01-16 04:34

It likely will not be a problem to swap those or even increase the cream to 4T. His answer was usually try"X" for a month, if you stop losing weight when you return, then X will not work for YOU. Personalization is fine if the client accepts the resullting progress..or reduction thereof.
By measuring veg and the extras this ends up around 20g total carbs. No calorie or carb counting to make this as simple and consistent as possible for study participants.

Thank you Janet :)

Another great Dr. Westman lecture on DietDoctor (membership is free for first month)
http://www.dietdoctor.com/member/pr...tions/westman-3

Dr. Eric Westman, one of the world’s leading experts on low-carb, on LCHF as a treatment of obesity and metabolic syndrome.

I looked at dietdr.com and found one major difference to Atkins. They don't like any artificial sweeteners, period. Also to want you to stay away from all prepared low carb products, including Atkins. They are not against dairy but should only be used in cooking, not as a snack. I like their concept, but giving up all artificial sweeteners (I use some splenda in my tea), is hard to do. I also like a Atkins shake for breakfast, its great for taking my meds in the morning.

Dr. Westman's diet lecture is presented on DietDoctor's membership website...they are both LC, but different programs for different client bases. Dr. Westman is not convinced that "food quality" has an major impact on weight loss, and since his clients are obese/diabetic/metabolically "deranged', he is OK with 3 packs of sweetener, regular mayo made with soybean oil, etc. Until a clinical trial proves otherwise, he considers rules such only real or non-processed food, grass-fed, etc "nice extras" but not required for weight loss. Many of his clients eat all fast food, or use diet soda, sugar-free jello, etc. and they still lose weight. A long-term goal may be to stop using artificial sweeteners, or other processed foods, but as long as you follow the clinic diet guidelines, they are allowed. For products like Atkins shakes, he would suggest a month trial, but if you stop losing weight, then they don't work for you.
