Hi Everyone! If you are lactose intolerant does that mean you can't have yogurt?

I bought this yogurt and I am not sure if it is ok to use..

This is the info on the container:
Brand: Astro
Balkan Style Yogurt
6.5% m.g

Nutrition Information:
per 175 g serving

calories 147
carbs 8 g
fat 10 g
protein 5.6 g

Ingredients: milk ingredients, active yogurt cultures.

Do I just count it as 8 g to be safe?

Help

Bless your heart for posting that article! I read something in passing about the bacteria in yogurt consuming the sugars, but was unable to confirm it or find anything in the Atkins book to support it, so have been skipping the yogurt. I think I'll go have some now, since my breakfast was a bit smallish today and not so high in protein.

I buy full fat yogurt at Trader Joe's. It contains nothing but milk and cultures and has the lovely layer of cream on top, which I mix in with my trusty chopsticks (easier than a whisk in a small container). Also, it's $1.59/quart and I haven't seen any other brand that cheap around here. If you don't have a Trader Joe's in your area, any co-op should carry at least one brand of plain full fat yogurt.

I always make up a couple of cups of yogurt with fruit for my husband's lunch - now he doesn't have to worry about wife drool mixed in with it!

There is a Whole Foods near me that sells a lovely unsweetened Bulgarian yogurt (forgot the brand name - sorry)

Hey gotbeer, if you find out that brand name please post it! I shop at Whole Foods all the time. I've been getting Brown Cow brand yogurt but would love to try another brand, if my local store sells it. Thanks!! --Sarah

Default Yogurt update

Just got back from a shopping trip to the Whole Foods.

The yogurt I mentioned earlier is named "White Mountain". They have a website whitemountainfoods.com.

The plain yogurt is sold in glass jars of various sizes (and a mammoth plastic jar in the largest size). The full-fat version has a purple/blue/purple label; the fat-free has an all-blue label (picture/nutritional info at the link above). The yogurt is thin enough to drink straight from the jar yet firm enough to mix nicely with nuts & berries.

For those in Canada, I get my yogourt from the organic section of Dominion. It has active acidophilus & bifidus cultures and it's 10% MF. It's thicker than my sour cream.

Here's a picture of what it looks like if anyone is looking for it.
http://www.liberte.qc.ca/html/home.asp

The nutritional info isn't on the package, so I pulled it off their site:

100g serving (100 mL):
Calories: 127
Protein: 3.71 g
Carbs (by diff): 4.16 g (actual carbs = 1.7 )
Fat: 10 g
Calcium: 136 mg

based on the above, a 1 cup serving would be:
Calories: 300
Protein: 8.8 g
Carbs (by diff): 10 g (actual carbs = 4 )
Fat: 23.7 g

Wait, Wanda....something isn't right here. Your carb counts are the same for 100g and 1 cup

Hi Teri:

Not sure how to label it. I guess the carb count (on the label) would be carbs by difference and what I labelled "net carbs" should be actual carbs. Does that make more sense?

So the carbs by difference (per the label) would be 4.16 and "actual carbs" (per Angela's post) would be 1.7 grams (I was just too lazy to do the math).

Maybe I should change that.

Wanda

I haven't yet had yogurt during lo carb, but I used to always have it during my previous way of life. It's good news to me that I can look forward to having it again this summer with fresh berries (except no granola this time ). The yogurt that I've always gotten was either Mountain High or Cascade Fresh, both of which have a full fat version and have no added sweeteners. I live near a Trader Joes, so I will have to check out their yogurt as well.

I bought the Stonyfield Farms brand here in VAncouver at Choices Market. I believe Capers also has it. It has 6 active cultures.

I also tried the Olympic plain full-fat Balkan style. It only lists "active cultures" in the ingredients, not how many. Tastes the same as Stonyfield.

I'm only using Stonyfield now as a lot of the stuff I read said to get the lowest carbs, try to make sure the yogurt has at least four active cultures.

I suspect the Olympic only has the main two, acidolphus and bifidus. Sure is nice to have an option besides eggs.

I also bought some whey protein powder to make my own shakes as another alternative. They're not bad.

K.

I'm glad my post is helpful and has started some yogurt discussion. Here's another helpful article that says pretty much the same thing: The Yogurt Exception

Mmmm.... yogurt. My latest thing is to mix strawberry protein powder in it.

Angela, another one of those benefits of hangin' around a forum like this. Lots of options. Thanks for the info. Who thought "carbs by difference" could make, well.... such a difference?

I've never tried Kefir, but maybe on my next run to the HFS, I'll pick some up. This could be an interesting adventure.

Did you guys see Karen's article about live yogurt cultures from Marketplace? http://www.cbc.ca/consumers/market/...gurt/index.html
Here's the thread:

Unfortunately, my yogurt didn't fair too well. Darn! And it's so thick and creamy.
