Walk your way into better brain health
I can’t stress the benefits of walking enough — for burning fat, boosting insulin sensitivity, and now, a new study is underscoring improvements in memory and cognitive function, too. Researchers recruited 33 adults who were, on average, 78 years old. Of the participants, 16 had mild cognitive impairment, and 17 had normal cognition. All subjects underwent memory and neural network connectivity testing before and after the 12-week treadmill walking intervention. Exercise sessions were supervised and lasted 30 minutes with a 10-minute warm-up and cool-down for a total of 50 minutes four days a week. Training frequency, intensity, and duration gradually increased over the first month. For the last 5-12 weeks, the intensity targeted 50 to 60% of their heart rate reserve (peak - resting heart rate). After the trial, significant improvements were noted in cardiorespiratory fitness, word association, verbal learning, and memory scores, and increased within and between-network neural connectivity in both cognitively impaired and cognitively healthy groups. Pretty sweet that a simple, free, and widely accessible intervention like walking can help stave off cognitive decline AND promote better brain function. Read the study here.

Demi, great study. Interesting note on subjects excluded from the study: left-handed people. I guess because that could affect how they evaluated co-ordination, since it's a righty world out there.
