I still don't have an off switch. What's changed is that my on switch is less insistent but I still use portion control.

This is the season for the daily barrage of "lose weight for the summer" articles, with quotes from various "nutritionists". I like to read them with the same sort of fascination as watching a trainwreck. Just read one this morning and sure enough this was one of the main points stressed by the nutritionist quoted in the article: " don't skip any meals. You'll never lose any weight that way."

Where did this idea come from? As Dr. Fung says, humans did not evolve to require three meals and two snacks every day.

Unless said to somebody who is likely to be actually harmed by weight loss. Mostly people seem to say this because they were hoping you'd try their banana bread or something.

That reminds me, all my life, especially when I was a youngster, people would say to me about my extra weight, "You're tall; you can carry it." Um, who wants to carry it? At a certain age, that isn't even an option.

Default Two doctors give advice.

From two doctors. One: you need to eat an apple and an Activa yogurt every day. Two: Whatever weight you're comfortable at, as long as your (blood test) numbers are good.
They were actually great when I was over 200 lbs. Ah, if I'd only known!

The phrase "Eat to satisfaction" irritates the heck out of me, especially when said in regard to a low fat (high carb) diet. Not only does it sound snippety, but it just ain't gonna happen! On low carb, I find it much easier to identify hunger and fullness though I still need to pay attention.

I agree. I was never close to satisfied eating a high carb diet. Ravenous was more like it. Still, even on a low carb diet, the one that leaves so many people feeling full and satisfied, this kind of advice doesn't work. I may not be ravenous any more but I do still have to practice portion control or else I eat too much food and start gaining weight. "Eat when hungry, stop when full" doesn't work for me. It seems to work for many people but not for me. To paraphrase Jo I have "eating makes me hungry" disease.

Me too. I was happy to see Dr. Fung mention in Undoctored that there is a difference between the insane hunger of a high carb diet (which I remember well), and the hunger of a low carb diet. I can still go a little bit crazy if I wait too long to eat lunch, but, oddly enough, I don't have a problem in the morning. And that's after an average of 16-18 hours since my last meal.
