Default ketogenic & paleo

Just listened to a podcast last night from Jimmy Moore interviewing an oncologist who has been researching the effects of ketogenic or very lc on shrinking tumors and starving cancer cells. Anyone here doing ketogenic paleo? I began this several days ago...mostly having greens, celery, bone broth w/lc veggies, grass fed meats and coconut oil. Feeling pretty good as I'm recovering from the flu and my lymph nodes overreacted...the inflammation seems to have gone down some since getting back to paleo. Terry

Yes, I am.
I am a cancer survivor and followed the vegetarian Cancer Project Diet for the first three years...gained sixty pounds, developed arthritis, skin rashes and generally felt lousy. Then read Good Calories, Bad Calories and began to see the light that all the grains on a high carb, low fat diet was not only the problem, but was increasing insulin and maybe the risk reoccurrence.

Did an about face and went Ketogenic after reading much more about cancer. Luckily have Duke and Dr. Westman nearby to guide my journey back to health, losing the weight I gained. I already avoided sugar, processed foods and ate real foods, so I do a Paleo Ketogenic diet. If you eat a lot of nutrient dense non starchy vegetables, rarely the "safe starches", the few times I've checked my blood ketones I was around 1... So good enough for my reason To remain ketogenic.

Were you listening to the Caveman Doctor, Colin Champ? Great new website. Good 1000 word summary of ketogenic for cancer.

This is another good resource...the video linked near the bottom of this page is fascinating. http://www.ketogenic-diet-resource....ses-cancer.html

I do it too. I am always on the alert again breast cancer as I've had more than one scare in that direction including a biopsy that was aborted literally at the last minute by the surgeon who finally got a good enough picture to abort the procedure. I don't check my blood ketosis because I know very clearly when I am in ketosis - no hunger at all, slightly sulphury urine, less than perfect morning breath. Sounds gross but those things make me happy! One day I'll do the blood tests. This past 10 days I have been very strict: fat, protein, non-starchy veg. No tweaks whatsoever. I feel on top of the world, but have to always be vigilant to eat "cleanly"; this is a pretty strict plan to follow.

Thank you so much for the links and the encouragement. My doctor knows nothing about the ketogenic diet and there is not one other person I know who lives nearby that does either. I appreciate your kind support in this.

Have you found it best to eliminate dairy? I've heard conflicting theories re same from Cordain's admonition that any kind of dairy causes problems, to the other spectrum that raw dairy is something good for us. Have you also eliminated nightshades and egg whites to minimize inflammation? T

After I read Cordain's chapter on dairy in the new edition of his book, I cut back dairy more because of the estrogenic effects, but still not completely. Certainly if you think dairy or the other items may be a problem for your health, try the Whole30 program and then challenge each item back. The only way to figure out the best diet for you is to eliminate possible intolerances, and then challenge.

If you have autoimmune issues, there is a very strict version of Paleo for that too. Person who has written the most about the autoimmune protocol is Sarah Ballentyne, the Paleo Mom. http://www.thepaleomom.com/the-autoimmune-protocol-aip. She has a podcast and there have been multiple episodes about AIP. I include nightshades and whole eggs myself, but my only goal is to stay ketogenic.

Jey gives great advice. I've learned a lot from her and from the links she posts. Personally, I did cut back a lot on dairy in the form of milk. I used to drink a couple of glasses a day but havn't touched it for years. I do still eat butter, cream in coffee, and miniscule quantities of full fat greek yogurt. That's it. I could live without the coffee, cream, and yogurt but am hanging onto the butter until someone wrestles it away from me.

Thank you flower and whofan. I've been at home and on-line more than usual to post links...have my first cold in three years. My immune system has been so strong since changing diet, including finally getting My Vit D level over 50mg, through both supplements and sun. It supposedly has to do with the amounts of good fats in this diet...when I was eating low fat, no amount of supplementation would budge Vit D up. But even my immune system was no match for the bug my DD brought home from school.
I am too lazy to stop at a second store and get my vitamins at Trader Joe's where I buy groceries. Their Multi No Iron has no sugar, starch, yeast or soy, but it does have a few other ingredients to question, inc carnauba wax?! Their line is suppose to be decent quality and they have good prices..not perfect, but when I add their Greek yogurt to my cart, I'm not perfectly Paleo either

Iherb.com doesn't charge for shipping on orders over $25 and swansonvitamins.com has cheaper prices, but charges 4.99.

I love shopping online.

Thanks still looking for something w/out B12 and w/out folate/folic acid as those two things encourage tumor growth. Let me know if you've found a multi w/out those. So far I haven't. T

Thanks for the great link Jey. In the caveman doctor article there was also a great link regarding autophagy. I have a hard time understanding the process, but this article explains it well. This is very motivating for me to eat more cleanly. Congratulations on being a cancer survivor.

I've been paleo / keto for quite some time now. Pay no attention to my orifule that says I am doing Atkins. I still do intermittent fasting however. Pale/keto / intermittent fasting

I do my best to stay in ketosis, and Im more "lacto-paleo" but the dairy I do eat is usually super fatty and really low carb/protein. Full fat cream, butter, cream cheese, sour cream, etc. Any way, I get tons of fat from coconut oil/milk as well, and coconut makes a decent replacement for dairy if you think youre dairy sensitive.

If you are trying the keto diet, be sure to check urine ketones after meals with lots of protein. Any more than 120g protein will take me out of ketosis, and any more than anout 35g carbs do the same thing to me.

My main problem has been insomnia, but with this diet, I sleep like a baby. I'm hoping to lose about 40 lbs and then see how I feel. I may decide to lose a little more after that.
