Mercola on using toxic waste as fertilizer.

I also agree with the suggestion that many plants have anti nutrients, goitrogens, toxic compounds and/or natural pesticides. I used to eat vast quantities of produce, which is actually pretty expensive considering they have little energy/nutrient value per dollar. I feel much better since I began severely limiting these foods and avoiding the ones that are problematic for me - such as nightshades and most brassicas. I do like fermented plant foods like kraut and red wine on occasion.

Just had to bump this.

Ruth Frith, age 100, who wins the gold and sets multiple world records in pentathlon (!) at the 2009 World Masters Games, hasn't eaten vegetables since childhood. She doesn't like em.

My kinda gal!

I have given up all sugar as I am a diabetic, we do not need sugar to live. I cannot eat bread either, but I am told sprouted breads are better. I eat meat, eggs, vegies. Not starchy vegies.

Sourdough bread is better, too, shrl, but most of us here are of the opinion that if it needs that much processing just to stop it from hurting you, it's not worth eating.

Just to keep our discussion well-balanced, here is a 100 year old Kitavan, who eats plenty of vegetables and tubers:

I would like to know exactly what the Kitavan eat. The study material on their dietary breakdown is extremely sketchy, but everyone loves to bring them up in support of carbs...

We never hear about the Ache or other tribes that choose meat over carbs, even when it is far less economical (calories/time and effort).

I would like to know for sure if the Kitavan are actually so different to these other tribes...

I know they have a high intake of fish oil, but I'd like to know the details of their diet too. This is what I could find:
Quote:
The residents of Kitava lived exclusively on root vegetables (yam, sweet potato, taro, tapioca), fruit (banana, papaya, pineapple, mango, guava, water melon, pumpkin), vegetables, fish and coconuts [27-29]. Less than 0.2% of the caloric intake came from Western food, such as edible fats, dairy products, sugar, cereals, and alcohol, compared with roughly 75% in Sweden [30].

almost - the kitavan would have had to NOT eaten something since childhood (fish maybe)? and set world records in athletics, then yer talkin.

Just yanking your chain. Outliers being what they are. It's fun though. Maybe some of us will finally get our 15 minutes of fame when we are 100 .

Did you read Steven Guyenet's articles? Think he covers their diet in there.
His series on Kitavan's starts with this: http://wholehealthsource.blogspot.c...ic-islands.html

If you find stuff on the Ache, please link it! Sounds interesting.

I eat non-starchy veggies from time to time cos they're such a great vehicle for butter.

Yeah, I know, butter ain't paleo. Bite me.

Lots of people on the Paleo forum eat a little dairy, and I don't think anyone has a problem with that. It's when people come on here and say that it is Paleo that the flame wars start. Do you see the distinction?

I sometimes think we need a forum for WAPF/Traditional Nutrition. I think these diets work great for some people and it would reduce the number of arguments about things like this hear and provide valuable support for fermenting, raw milk, and other Traditional Nutrition topics.

Yup. I think it's gray. There isn't any evidence for it, but there isn't any evidence against either, though there is certainly a lot of strong opinion. Do you see the distinction?
