Hi. I'm pretty sure you're talking about TVP, textured vegetable protein. It's the leftover protein and fiber from soy oil production. Heh heh. I don't think they're supposed to replace real grits. Shame on anyone marketing it that way.
Vegetarians use it as a ground beef replacer. I use it in my veggie boyfriends' chili. I think it tastes pretty crappy and I don't bother eating it unless I'm desperate and/or too lazy or poor to buy real ground beef. If you'd rather use it than waste it, try reconstituting it in beef broth and blending it in with other ground beef recipes, like burgers, meat loaves, chili, etc.
