Default Soy Grits

I was missing grits. So I bought a big bag of soy grits. I prepared them as directed. They were not what I was expecting. I even tried to turn them into a hot "sweet" cereal. Didn't work either. Any ideas on what else I could do with this? I would hate to just throw them away without trying.

Hi. I'm pretty sure you're talking about TVP, textured vegetable protein. It's the leftover protein and fiber from soy oil production. Heh heh. I don't think they're supposed to replace real grits. Shame on anyone marketing it that way.

Vegetarians use it as a ground beef replacer. I use it in my veggie boyfriends' chili. I think it tastes pretty crappy and I don't bother eating it unless I'm desperate and/or too lazy or poor to buy real ground beef. If you'd rather use it than waste it, try reconstituting it in beef broth and blending it in with other ground beef recipes, like burgers, meat loaves, chili, etc.

There is such a product as soy grits. I was debating about buying it at my healthfood store - but I don't miss grits much, so I hadn't.

Is the stuff you have in tiny bits, like coarse cornmeal? or is it bigger chunks, like the size of a lentil? the bigger stuff is TVP (or SVP, as some brands call it)...

I guess I might not buy the soy grits then...they sound sort of icky! Thanks for testing that out for us!!!

If you like cornbread, this this one:

If you don't have the Atkins mix, I'd say any LC baking mix would work fine.

Also I read that TVP is from soybeans that have been steamed while soy grits has not been steamed (and the TVP is larger in size) but you could try steaming soy grits and using in a TVP recipe--might need to adjust the amount used for size difference unless it's weighed.

Soy grits look a lot like cornmeal to me. They're great in my friend, Nancy's, Mock Cornbread.

Thanks! I was considering using it like a cornmeal. That's what it resembled to me. I just didn't want to waste my time. So I thought I'd check first.

I would suggest mixing it with other stuff though to avoid the soy taste--I mix Carbquik, Hazelnut meal and Soy grits and use whenever cornmeal is called for.

Now THIS looks good...might have to buy them soy grits after all. I've yet to find a decent LC cornbread...perhaps this is it!
