Day 32

haven't updated in awhile. Am having problems quitting the sugar free gum I'm chewing, but apart from that things are getting easier. I am still struggling with some depression and my god, my *first* period nicotine-free was a real challenge. I got very bad pms and was in a foul, foul, foul mood. HOwever I got through it. The lithium (5mg) has really helped me. I am struggling to maintain my weight but it isn't going sky-high, just up a bit.

The dizziness has mostly gone now. I have been to a few parties and the last one was tough and I did want to smoke but it was just mental, not physical in any way. I am, however, finding that alcohol has a HUGE effect on me now. I drank too much at the last party and got quite emotional - I didn't drink thatmuch but it was TOO MUCH for me without nicotine. I am falling asleep at night really too early as well - 9pm and I'm shutting my eyes. HOwever I haven't been sleeping solidly at all - still struggling with insomnia despite feeling so tired.

Basically, the fatigue has been a problem, but at least the cravings are getting less and less. With hindsight I do think it is true that the first 3 days are the worst, but that mentally the first 2 weeks are the toughest. But it is certainly possible.

I bought new clothes with the money I have saved from not spending it on nicotine so that has been a big plus. This has not been a pic-nic, but it is certainly possible - something which I didn't believe before!

It is definitely nice not to feel that my whole life revolves around when I can get my next smoke/chew. I will no longer need to panic if I am on a long-haul flight and discover I didn't bring enough nicorette with me! THAT is motivating in itself.

Day 50 update. Haven't updated for awhile so thought I'd post.

I'm really struggling with anxiety and depression and it's been getting worse the past 2 weeks. I am also craving 'something' most of the day, so am chewing sugar free gum.

I still have insomnia issues, although these have improved slightly. I just keep reminding myself that I smoked for 15 years, 14 of those I smoked every single day. I was probably using tobacco as an anti-depressant and now it has been withdrawn I have relapsed.

I am not willing to go on anti-ds - I very strongly do not want to go that route, so I will have to wait this one out and hope things improve in due time.

Wait is stable - no net gain from the quit so far!

It is as if the memory of smoking is more poignant now than before - before I was just overwhelmed with physical withdrawal - now I am just sad and craving. But it isn't an 'urgent' craving. I don't want to ever go back to using tobacco ever again though to I am willing to plod along feeling like this.
