Question Eat breakfast to "get your metabolism going."

Is it wrong of me to want to violently murder the next nutritionist/dietician/fitness guru who says this? I mean, our metabolisms are ALWAYS going...otherwise we'd be dead! And if what they really mean is "reve it up a notch" then wouldn't some brisk walking do the same thing? Am I missing something? I eat one meal per day, in the evening, and feel VERY energetic all day long!

Well, you may be needlessly boosting your blood pressure, because this gets said/written very frequently, and you still don't have to do it. Eat breakfast, that is.

True of many people on this forum. Just don't go telling everybody else that this is the BEST way to "boost your metabolism" or lose weight or sustain ketosis or anything else prescriptive, or they'll want to violently murder you. (Ju-u-u-ust kidding.)

As of today, the FDA has finally got around to acknowledging that trans fats can kill you. Like...duh, even the junk food marketers were getting the "Zero Trans Fat" message years ago, and started lying in new, creative ways about the ingredients in the same old junk food. But, well, that belongs in another thread.

Have a nice day.

The most important meal of the day is whenever you become hungry. For many here, that is one or two meals per day and not usually first thing in the morning. To rev up my metabolism, I can do a workout first thing in the morning, and my body already has its own food source!

Dr Fung says that there are multiple fasting patterns in multiple cultures and religions. I eat breakfast and lunch and don't eat dinner. It works for me. My pattern of eating and fasting seems in the minority here but I do know that that Buddhist monks and nuns don't eat after noon, so I am not the only one.

Didn't know that about Buddhist monks and nuns, that's interesting.

There actually is sort of an argument for skipping eating later in the day rather than early, the circadian rhythm meal timing studies tend to use this pattern of feeding.

http://caloriesproper.com/

Bill at caloriesproper has some blog posts with smarter arguments in favour of eating breakfast--but he's not an eat every two hours to keep your metabolism sort of guy, he's fine with meal-skipping and intermittent fasting, just doesn't think breakfast is the best meal to skip.

It's interesting stuff, although I'm very skeptical. By the time you've controlled an experiment to the point where you're certain about cause and effect, you've made certain that your results are very specific to those operating conditions. Sort of like that thing in quantum physics, where if you measure one aspect of a particle, it's impossible to measure the other. A mouse in a cage is in the opposite of an enriched environment--it might become hypersensitive to cues of the passage of time such as light and dark. It's possible that circadian entrainment is subtler out in nature.

We've got folks on this forum promoting 3 meals + snacks. So even here we're refugees!

When I eat my one and only meal late in the day...it's morning and breakfast somewhere in the world right?

I tried the 4-5 smaller meal concept without success! I truly suffer from "I'm only hungry when I put food in my mouth" syndrome! If left to my own devices...I could graze all day long... And thinking of eating breakfast when I first get up in the AM makes me nauseous.

IMHO, we all have to do what works for us to lose the weight and keep it off forever, eh?

Wishing everyone continued success on your personal journeys to better health!

I always say, you can't break a fast without breakfast. Har har.
It just doesn't have to be morning.

I suffer from the same syndrome. Right now 2 meals a day is working for me. I have noticed that I feel a sense of relief after I have eaten my second meal, which is lunch. I can stop thinking about food until the next morning. Unlike you, Jo, I find myself hungry in the morning. It could just be habit but I like having breakfast so that's what I do. Whatever works.

I used to be hungry all day, now just 3x a day. But I don't eat breakfast first thing - usually wait 1 or 2 hours because I'm just not that hungry right away.

Over the last year or so my meals have become smaller (more like a "normal" person's meal), so I suppose that one day I'll be eating just twice.

I eat breakfast about 2 hours after I get up too, but since I usually get up at 5 AM and eat breakfast about 7 AM it doesn't feel like a late breakfast.

Me too and on many days I don't eat lunch because bacon and eggs from breakfast keeps me full, but some days I do eat lunch.
I definitely always eat a good dinner of fresh veggies and clean meats.

When I wake up that early, I snuggle back down & either go back to sleep or read until 6:30 or 7! I usually have breakfast around 8:00 which works for our schedules. Husband gets up earlier & makes his own breakfast. I'm not a morning person, but as I get older I get up earlier.

I like a morning breakfast. It's usually a couple of hours after I get up. I've been trying to determine when I should eat due to hunger, instead of the clock. My lunches seem to be 3 pm or later. It is difficult to look at the clock and see that it is noonish and not eat just because of the time. Two meals a day would probably be enough for me, but I'm still eating in the evening. I need to break that habit.
